About this piece
Plush ring cushion shaped as a bread roll with a face, in four expressions
A bread roll with a face, to sit on. This cushion is a ring in a golden plush, shaped as a round bun with a hole in the middle and a paler crust on top, with a small face embroidered at the front, two pink cheeks and two stubby feet sticking out below, in four expressions: one sleepy, one cheerful, one surprised and one content. It is the ring cushion of a Japanese bakery mascot, and it is soft enough to sit on for an afternoon.
It is the silliest cushion in the collection, and the one with four faces to choose from.
The name, Panza, is the bread seat, and the cushion is a bun.
The cushion is a plush ring sewn in two tones, a golden side and a paler top like a crust, stuffed firm enough to sit on with the hole open at the centre, with the face embroidered in black and pink and two small feet stuffed and sewn on below.
Put it on a chair, a floor or a bed and sit in the ring, which takes the weight off the base of the spine, or hug it, which is what it is bought for. The four expressions are four cushions; the size option on the page picks the face.
The feet are the detail: two stubby golden feet stitched to the front edge of the ring so the bun looks as if it is sitting too, and the face above them is embroidered small, with the cheeks in pink. The crust on top is a paler plush.
Japan sits on the floor, and the cushion is the chair. On tatami or on boards it goes under a low table, in front of a window, beside a bed; in a Western room it goes on a sofa, a chair or a floor by the fire, and it is the thing a guest is handed. Every cushion in the collection is photographed on the same pale ground at the same scale, so the pages compare.
Machine wash cool in a bag on a gentle cycle and dry flat; reshape the ring when damp. Brush the pile when dry.
From across a room it is a golden ring with a face. From close the face shows its expression, the feet their stitching, and the crust its paler pile. It is the cushion for a desk chair and a person who likes bread.
One size, the round of a seat with a hole at the centre. The four options on the page are four expressions, not four sizes.
Questions about the japanese cushions
What is a zabuton?
The flat floor cushion of a Japanese room: the seat at a low table, in front of a window, beside a bed. The round ones here are zabuton; the straw ones are the tea-room and temple versions; the plush ones are the same idea with a face.
What are they made of?
The straw cushions are coiled rush or straw, bound with cord. The cloth cushions have a cotton-mix cover, printed or napped, over a firm synthetic wadding. The plush ones are a short-pile plush over a soft fill. The fabric line on each page says which.
How big are they?
The rush cushion is 30 cm; the printed zabuton comes in 43, 49 or 59 cm; the others are the round of a seat, and the hamster is a child's chair. Every cushion is photographed at the same scale, so the pages compare.
Are they made in Japan?
No. They are a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
Can I use them on a chair?
Yes. The square wave cushion is made for one; the round ones sit on a chair, a bench or a window seat as well as the floor. The straw ones are for the floor, a stool or a teapot.
How do I wash them?
Cloth and plush cushions: machine wash cool on a gentle cycle, dry flat, reshape when damp. Straw: keep dry, brush, air in the sun. The hamster is spot clean.
What we sell, and what we don't
Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We say so on every page, because the alternative is selling you a word instead of a garment.
