About this piece
Patchwork sneakers in navy, orange and striped panels, in white or black
Every panel on these sneakers is a different colour. Navy brushed at the toe and the side, orange at the heel, grey mesh at the front, a striped panel of orange, red and teal down the back, blue laces, and a sole blocked in white, orange and green. The black version keeps the striped heel and the orange sole and puts the rest in black and blue with a yellow star on the side.
It is the most colourful sneaker in the collection and the most carefully pieced, and the striped heel is what holds it: every colour on the shoe appears in it.
The name, Iroasobi, is playing with colour, which is what the shoe does, and the name is honest.
The sole is a colour-blocked moulded platform with a deep tread, the upper is a mix of mesh, synthetic panels and a knit collar, and the shoe is cushioned through the midsole, so it walks a city all day. It is the chunky sneaker, the shape Japan made its own, cut for a wide foot.
Wear them with a white sock pulled up, as in the photograph, which is how every pair in this collection was shot and how they are worn in Tokyo: the sock is part of the shoe. White trousers, black jeans, the cropped pants from the range, and nothing else on the foot that argues.
The panels are separate cloths stitched to the mesh, so the seams show and the colours meet at lines rather than fades, and the striped panel is a woven tape. The laces are blue on both versions.
The last is a Japanese one, wider at the toe box than a European sneaker and lower at the instep, which is part of why they run small: the length is short and the width is generous. A wide foot will be comfortable; a narrow one will want the thicker sock.
Wipe them with a damp cloth; do not machine wash. A soft brush for the mesh, a cloth for the panels, and they are ready for the next day.
From across a street they are colour on a white or black shoe. From close the panels show their seams, the stripe its weave, and the sole its three blocks. They are the sneaker for a plain trouser and a plain tee, which is all they need.
Sizes run from EU 39 to 45. They are cut to Asian sizing and run small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.
Questions about the japanese sneakers
What is a Japanese sneaker?
A sneaker designed in the Tokyo streetwear tradition: chunky soles, layered panels, knit collars, colour used with intent and a white sock worn pulled up.
Do they run small?
Yes. They are cut on an Asian last, shorter in length and wider at the toe than a European sneaker. Take one size up from your usual; between two sizes, take the larger.
What are they made of?
Synthetic, mesh, knit or brushed uppers on moulded rubber or EVA soles, depending on the pair. The fabric line on each product page says which.
Are they made in Japan?
No. They are a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
How do I wear them?
With a white sock pulled up, as photographed, and a trouser that shows the shoe: cropped, tapered or a jogger with a ribbed cuff.
How do I clean them?
Wipe with a damp cloth and a soft brush for the mesh. Do not machine wash, and keep them out of direct heat.
What we sell, and what we don't
Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We say so on every page, because the alternative is selling you a word instead of a garment.
