About this piece
The black boston bag with two handles and a long zip that every student carries
The flat-topped bag with two handles is as much a part of the Japanese school uniform as the sailor collar, and this is it: a structured black bag in a rounded rectangle, a zip running the whole length of the top, two handles to carry it by hand or over the shoulder, a pocket across the front with a strap and a ring, and a metal D-ring at each side for a strap of your own. The shape holds. That is the point of it.
It is the bag of a million train platforms, carried by the handles at knee height or slung over one shoulder, and it fits a laptop, two books, a bottle and the small things a day needs without losing its corners.
The name, Tsugaku, is the daily commute to school, the walk and the train and the walk again, and the bag is what makes the trip.
The exterior is a smooth black synthetic leather over a firm lining that gives the bag its structure, chosen because a school bag is dropped, kicked under a desk and rained on, and this one wipes clean. The handles are stitched through, the zip is metal, and the rings are plated.
Carry it with any of the uniform sets for the full picture, or with jeans and a coat as the black bag you did not know you needed. It is the right size for a day, and the wrong size for a week, which is what a boston bag is.
Inside, there are pockets against the back wall for a phone and a pen, and the lining is firm enough that the bag stands open on a desk without collapsing. The front pocket takes a travel card.
From across a platform it is a black rectangle with two handles. From close the stitching shows on the handles, the zip shows its metal, and the rings show their plating. It is the accessory that finishes the uniform and outlives it.
It is sold as an accessory to the uniforms, and it is the accessory that most changes them: a sailor set with a boston bag is a uniform; a sailor set with a rucksack is a costume. The bag is what makes the difference, and it costs less than the difference is worth.
It comes in one size, and one size is the size it has always been.
Questions about the japanese school uniform
Is this a real Japanese school uniform?
It is the pattern of one: the sailor top with the striped collar, the knife-pleated skirt, the gakuran with its stand collar and gold buttons. No school, no badge, no crest. The cut is the real cut, and it is sold to adults.
What comes in a set?
The top and the skirt, or the jacket and the trousers, and the bow or scarf where the page shows one. Socks, bag and shoes are sold separately on their own pages.
Does it run small?
Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Take one size up from your usual; between two sizes, take the larger. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.
What is it made of?
The uniforms are polyester blends, woven to hold a pleat and a collar. The socks are a nylon knit, the bag and the shoes a synthetic leather. Each page says which. Never silk, never wool.
Is it made in Japan?
No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
How do I wash it?
Machine wash cold, inside out, and hang the skirt from the waistband so the pleats fall straight; they come back on the hanger. Bows and scarves come off first. Wipe the bag and shoes with a damp cloth.
What we sell, and what we don't
Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We say so on every page, because the alternative is selling you a word instead of a garment.
