About this piece
A hannya mask biting a sword on the back, white line drawings on the front
Front and back, this is two different jackets. Turn it round and it is a full-colour tattoo back-piece: a white hannya mask with red horns and gold fangs biting down on a sword, a black snake coiling through its horns, pink lotus flowers and grey-blue waves around it, a red sun in cloud above. Turn it back and the colour is gone. The fronts and sleeves carry koi and waves drawn only in white line on the black, like a design before it has been coloured in, with two brushed characters and a spray of pink flowers at the chest as the one exception.
That is a clever way to build a bold jacket. From the front it is graphic and quiet, black with white drawing, and it goes to lunch. From behind it is the loudest thing in the street. You choose which side to show.
The name, Kijo, means demon woman, which is what the hannya is: the mask from the Noh stage of a woman whose jealousy has turned her into a demon, still with a trace of grief in the eyes if you look. The mask on this jacket has it.
It is printed, not embroidered, with the back in flat, hard-edged colour and the fronts in a single white line. The cloth is polyester with a smooth surface and a dry hand, chosen because black must stay black around white line work, and because a haori this heavy in subject should still be light on the shoulders. Three-quarter sleeves, open front with a flat band, no fastening, hem at the hip.
At three metres the front is a black jacket with pale drawing at the hem and the back is a white face with red horns. At thirty centimetres the snake has scales, the sword has a grip, and the line-drawn koi on the front have every fin. It is drawn for people who look twice.
The cut is a short open men's haori, square at the shoulder and relaxed through the body. Over a white tee, the white line drawings on the front link to the tee and the whole front reads as one graphic. Over black, the front disappears and the back is everything. It goes with black trousers, dark denim, and boots.
Sizes run from M to 5XL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.
Questions about the haori
Is a haori the same as a kimono jacket?
Close cousins. A haori is the short coat worn open over a kimono in Japan. Ours keep that shape, a flat front band, wide three-quarter sleeves and a hem at the hip, and are cut to sit over a T-shirt. A kimono jacket is the same idea with a plainer edge and, often, a tie or toggle.
Does it run small?
Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Between two sizes, take the larger. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.
Is it silk?
No. Every haori in this collection is polyester, as stated on its page and on the inner label. We never sell silk as something else, or something else as silk.
Is it made in Japan?
No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
How do I wear it?
Open, over a plain T-shirt, with denim or dark trousers, and nothing else patterned: the print is the point. Three-quarter sleeves make it a spring-to-autumn layer, and a knit underneath carries it into the first cold weeks.
How do I wash it?
Machine wash cold, inside out, with similar colours. Hang to dry. Iron on low, inside out over any print.
