About this piece

Black ink dropped into white water, frozen the second it started to spread

Suminagashi is the old Japanese craft of floating ink on water and lifting the pattern off with a sheet of paper. No two sheets are the same, and none of them can be repeated. This jacket takes that idea and turns the contrast all the way up: black ink, white water, broad currents of one twisting through the other across the front, the back and both sleeves. There is no crane, no dragon, no wave. Just movement.

It is the most graphic piece in the collection and the easiest to describe from across a room, which is not the same thing as being simple. Look at the back and the swirls have a direction, pulling from one shoulder down to the opposite hip. Look at the front and the two panels do not match, which is how a marbled sheet behaves. It was designed to look accidental and printed to look exact.

The print is all over, printed rather than woven, with the edges of the black kept hard against the white. The cloth is polyester, which is what keeps a white this white and a black this black after the machine has had its way. It is light, a shirt-weight layer for warm months, and it does not crease into the pattern the way a cotton would.

The cut is a short open kimono jacket. A black edge runs down both fronts, there is no fastening, the sleeves are wide and stop at the elbow, and the hem sits at the hip. Over a white tee, the white of the tee joins the white of the print and the black swirls seem to wrap around you. Over a black tee, the effect reverses.

This is the jacket for someone who wants a strong print without a picture in it. It goes with black, with white, with grey, and with nothing patterned. It photographs well, which people tend to discover on the first evening out. Wear it open, always.

It is also the one print in the range that changes most with distance. Across a street it is a bold graphic. Across a table it is marbling, with all the small eddies and pale threads that ink makes when it meets water. Up close it is almost calm, because none of the edges are straight and the eye stops looking for a pattern and starts following a line. That is what marbling has always been for, and it is a good thing to have on your back.

Sizes run from M to 5XL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about the kimono jacket

Is a kimono jacket the same as a haori?

No. A haori has a collar band folded back on itself and is worn open over a kimono. A kimono jacket has a plain faced edge, closes with a single toggle or tie, and is cut to sit over a T-shirt.

Does it run small?

Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Between two sizes, take the larger. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.

Is it silk?

No. Each piece is cotton, linen or polyester, as stated in its description and on the inner label. We never sell silk as something else, or something else as silk.

Is it made in Japan?

No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.

How do I wear it?

Open, over a plain T-shirt, with denim or dark trousers. Elbow-length sleeves make it a spring and autumn layer; long sleeves carry into winter over a knit.

How do I wash it?

Machine wash cold, inside out, with similar colours. Hang to dry. Iron on low, inside out over any print or embroidery.

What we sell, and what we don't
