About this piece

Matcha set with a spouted bowl, bamboo whisk, stand and scoop, in black or white

Everything you need to whisk a bowl of matcha, in one colour. This set is a stoneware bowl with a small pouring lip at the rim, a bamboo whisk with its tines split fine and curled, a stoneware stand the whisk rests on upside down so the tines keep their curl, and a bamboo scoop for the powder, in a matte black glaze or a speckled white. The photographs show both.

It is the set for making matcha at home without a tea master, and the pouring lip is the modern touch: it lets the tea go into a cup or a latte.

The name, Chasen, is the bamboo whisk, the one tool a matcha set cannot do without, and the set is named for it.

The bowl is a glazed stoneware, wide and low with a lip, the stand a small glazed cone, and the whisk and the scoop are bamboo, the whisk cut from a single piece into eighty or so tines and the scoop bent at the tip over heat. The black set is matte throughout; the white is a speckled glaze on the stoneware and pale bamboo. Both bowls are wide enough to whisk in without splashing.

Use it every morning: a scoop and a half of powder in the bowl, a splash of water just off the boil, and whisk in a fast zigzag until the surface foams, then drink from the bowl or pour from the lip. Rest the whisk on its stand to dry, tines down, and it lasts a year.

The stand is the detail: a small cone the whisk sits over after washing, which keeps the tines curled outward instead of collapsing, and it is the piece most home sets leave out. The lip on the bowl is the other, and it is not traditional, and it is useful.

From across a table it is a bowl, a whisk and a cone in one colour. From close the whisk shows its tines, the bowl its lip, and the glaze its matte or its speckle. It is the set for a person who drinks matcha and wants to make it.

Wash the bowl and the stand by hand; rinse the whisk in warm water only, no soap, and dry it on the stand. The scoop is wiped, not washed.

One size. The bowl holds a single serving with room to whisk; the whisk and the scoop are the standard length.

Questions about the japanese tableware

What is in the sake set?

A corked flask, a tall jar to warm the flask in hot water, six small cups and a round tray, all in the same speckled stoneware with a blue carp. Fill the jar with hot water, stand the flask in it for a few minutes, and pour for someone else.

How do I make matcha with the set?

A scoop and a half of powder in the bowl, a splash of water just off the boil, and whisk in a fast zigzag until it foams. Rinse the whisk in water only and dry it on its stand, tines down, so they keep their curl.

What are they made of?

The sake set and the tea cup are glazed ceramic; the matcha bowl and stand are stoneware; the whisk and the scoop are bamboo; the bento box is bent wood with wooden cutlery and a printed cloth bag. Each page says which.

Are they made in Japan?

No. They are a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.

Can they go in the dishwasher?

The stoneware sake pieces can; the cork cannot. The gold tea cup, the wooden bento box, the bamboo whisk and scoop are hand wash only, and the bamboo is wiped, not soaked.

How big are they?

The sake cups hold two mouthfuls; the tea cup a full cup; the matcha bowl one serving with room to whisk; the bento box a lunch for one. Every piece is photographed at the same scale, so the pages compare.

What we sell, and what we don't

Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We say so on every page, because the alternative is selling you a word instead of a garment.
