About this piece
Relaxed pinstripe trousers gathered at the ankle, in black, navy or grey
A pinstripe on a trouser that gathers at the ankle is a good joke, and these tell it well. Fine white stripes run down a relaxed leg from a soft drawstring waist to an ankle that gathers on an elastic and turns up once over the trainer, in black, as in the photograph, in navy, or in grey. Slash pockets, and nothing else.
It is the pair in the collection that borrows from the suit and gives nothing back, and it is the one to wear when the joggers feel too soft and the trousers too stiff.
The name, Hosojima, is the fine stripe, the pinstripe, and the trousers are drawn in it.
The cut is a relaxed leg with room through the thigh, a soft waist on a drawstring and an ankle that gathers, with a hem cut to turn. The cloth is a polyester-cotton blend with a dry, slightly slubbed hand and a woven stripe, chosen because a stripe must stay straight through washing and a trouser this relaxed needs cloth that drapes. The stripe is woven, not printed.
Wear them with a plain tee and trainers, as in the photograph, or with a knit and boots in the cold. They go with white, black, grey and any jacket in the range, and they do not need a belt unless you want one.
They wash cold, inside out, and dry on a line; the cloth does not crease into a map and does not need an iron, which is the point of a trouser cut for a street rather than an office.
From across a street they are dark striped trousers with a soft ankle. From close the stripes show their fine white line, the gather its elastic, and the turn-up its fold. They are the pair for someone who wants a stripe and does not want an office.
The waist is a flat elastic under the drawstring, so the stripe sits straight at the top and the trousers stay up without the cord tight, and the pockets are set in the side seams. The gather at the ankle is an elastic in a channel, soft enough to push up the calf in the heat.
Sizes run from M to 5XL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.
Questions about the japanese pants
What kind of trousers are these?
Japanese street trousers: cargos, joggers, wide legs and the tobi and harem cuts of the building site and the temple town, several embroidered with cranes, dragons and clouds. Every page says the cut, and every pair was photographed with a white tee and white trainers, which is how they are worn.
Does it run small?
Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Take one size up from your usual; between two sizes, take the larger. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.
What is it made of?
Mostly light polyester-cotton blends, with denim for the two denim pairs, a linen-look cotton blend for the embroidered ones, corduroy blends for the patchwork and the workwear pair, and a heat-set pleated polyester for the pleated trousers. Each page says which.
Embroidered or printed?
Each page says. The cranes, the characters and the clouds are embroidered; the dragons and the camouflage are printed; the kimono and dragon panels are printed cloth sewn in.
Is it made in Japan?
No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
How do I wash it?
Machine wash cold, inside out, and hang to dry; denim with its own colour the first time. Nothing needs ironing, and the pleated pair must not be.
What we sell, and what we don't
Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We say so on every page, because the alternative is selling you a word instead of a garment.
