About this piece
Flat woven straw sandals with a straw rope thong, the plainest summer zori
A woven sole and a rope between the toes, and nothing else. These sandals are an oval of straw cord coiled and woven tight, with a thong of twisted straw rope that rises between the first two toes and runs back to anchor at either side of the heel, worked into the weave. They are the plainest sandal in the collection and the one that looks most like something made by hand, because it was.
They are the summer version of the zori, the flat Japanese sandal, in the material the zori began in, before rubber and cloth.
The name is the Japanese one for the thing: zori, the flat sandal with a thong, worn with a yukata in summer and with anything at all on a hot day. Straw zori were kept at the door of a Japanese house and stepped into on the way out.
The sole is straw cord coiled from the centre outward and bound through, so the top shows the spiral and the edge the rows. The thong is the same cord twisted into a thicker rope, knotted under the sole at three points.
Wear them barefoot, as photographed, with a rolled trouser, a pair of shorts or a jinbei, and let the straw show. They are for a warm day and a dry pavement, a terrace, the walk to the beach, the pair by the door for the summer.
The straw is stiff the first day and softens with wear, and the sole takes the shape of the foot. The rope thong is the part that rubs at first and then does not; a thin tabi sock for the first week solves it for a sensitive foot.
They are flat and light and grip a dry surface. On wet ground they take up the water, so they are a fair-weather sandal.
Keep them out of standing water: straw and rope take it up and dry stiff. Brush off dust, sponge a mark, and dry in the shade. A pair worn every day looks better at the end of the summer than the start.
From across a street they are a pale flat sandal. From close the sole shows its spiral and its rows, the thong its twist, and the edge its binding. They are the sandal for a person who wants the summer to look like summer from the ankle down.
Sizes run from EU 38 to 45. They are cut to Asian sizing and run small, so take one size up from your usual; the straw sole should end just past the heel, and a little length is better than a little less.
Questions about the japanese sandals
What is the difference between zori and waraji?
Both are flat Japanese sandals with a thong between the toes. Zori have a thong and nothing else, and are stepped into. Waraji add rope cords that cross the foot and tie at the ankle, and were the sandal for walking long distances.
Do they run small?
Yes. They are cut to Asian sizing. Take one size up from your usual; a flat sandal should end just at or past the heel, and the size up keeps the toes off the front edge.
What are they made of?
The waraji and the straw zori are woven straw cord with a straw or rope thong. The black zori are a moulded synthetic sole with a woven mat footbed and a padded fabric thong. The fabric line on each page says which.
Are they made in Japan?
No. They are a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
How do I wear them?
Barefoot in summer, or over a white split-toe tabi sock, as photographed. Under a yukata, a jinbei, shorts or a rolled trouser.
How do I care for them?
Keep the straw out of standing water, brush off dust and dry in the shade. Wipe the black zori with a damp cloth. Never dry any of them on a radiator.
What we sell, and what we don't
Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We say so on every page, because the alternative is selling you a word instead of a garment.
