About this piece
A tiger drawn in a single white line, prowling round from front to back
One line, and a tiger. This happi coat is black, and the animal on it is drawn in a fine white outline only, no fill and no colour, prowling across the back with its head turned and its paws reaching over the fronts and the sleeves, so the coat carries the drawing all the way round. The one colour is red: a dot for each eye. The collar band is plain.
It is the quietest of the tiger coats and the most graphic, closer to a tattoo stencil than to a print, and it is the one that works after the festival, in a bar, in a street, because black with a white line is a palette that goes anywhere.
The name, Sumitora, is the ink tiger, the animal drawn rather than painted, and the drawing is the whole coat.
It is printed, not embroidered, with the line kept fine and even and the black kept matte around it. The cloth is polyester, firmly woven with a dry, matte hand and a clean drape, chosen because a happi is a coat for standing in a crowd in July and must stay light, hold a flat collar band and keep its print through a summer of washing. It is unlined.
The cut is the classic happi: straight through the body, falling to mid-thigh, with wide three-quarter sleeves, a flat collar band and no fastening. It hangs open over a white tee and stays open, with a slit at each side.
From across a street it is a black coat with a pale drawing on it. From close the tiger has stripes, whiskers and claws, every one a single stroke, and the red eyes find you. It is the coat in the range that most rewards the person standing behind you.
Wear it over a white tee and white trousers, as in the photograph, or over black for a coat that is all line and nothing else. It goes with anything plain, and with nothing printed.
The collar band is flat and black and the line of the tiger runs under it, so the drawing continues behind the band as if the band were laid on top. The coat is longer and straighter than a haori, and a single-line animal needs that length to stretch out.
Sizes run from S to 5XL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.
Questions about the happi coat
What is a happi coat?
The straight, open coat of the Japanese festival: a flat collar band that never folds back, wide sleeves cut in one with the body, a hem at mid-thigh and no fastening. It is worn open over a T-shirt by the people carrying the shrine, and by everyone else watching.
Is it the same as a haori?
No. A haori is shorter, with a collar band folded back on itself, and was worn over a kimono. A happi is longer and straighter, with a flat band, and was made to be worn in a crowd. Ours keep that cut.
Does it run small?
Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Take one size up from your usual; between two sizes, take the larger. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.
Is it silk or cotton?
Neither. Every happi in this collection is polyester, firmly woven and unlined, as stated on its page and on the inner label. We never sell silk as something else, or something else as silk.
Is it made in Japan?
No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
How do I wash it?
Machine wash cold, inside out, with similar colours. Hang to dry. Iron on low, inside out over the print.
