About this piece
Round floor cushion in a Japanese indigo print, in three prints and three diameters
A round cushion in indigo and white, in three prints and three sizes. This zabuton is a padded disc covered in a blue and white Japanese print, one of three: a patchwork of stripes and scales in blocks, the overlapping-wave pattern in navy, or flowing water drawn in fine lines, and it comes in three diameters, from a seat for one to a cushion for two to share. It is the round floor cushion of a Japanese room in its printed form.
It is the cushion in the collection with the most choice, and the three prints are three of the range's own.
The name, Naminoza, is the seat of the waves, and the prints are all water.
The cushion is a round of printed cloth on both faces, padded with a firm synthetic wadding and stitched round the edge with a seam, without a button, so the top is flat and the print shows whole. The three sizes are the same print at the same scale.
Put it on the floor at a low table, one per person, or the large one in a corner for a child, a dog or a person with a book. It goes on a sofa too, where the print does the work.
The whole print is the detail: without a button at the centre, the pattern reads uninterrupted across the disc, so the scales or the water run edge to edge. The seam at the rim is plain and the edge is soft.
Japan sits on the floor, and the cushion is the chair. On tatami or on boards it goes under a low table, in front of a window, beside a bed; in a Western room it goes on a sofa, a chair or a floor by the fire, and it is the thing a guest is handed. Every cushion in the collection is photographed on the same pale ground at the same scale, so the pages compare.
Machine wash cool on a gentle cycle and dry flat; iron on low if it needs it. The print is fast.
From across a room it is a blue disc on the floor. From close the disc shows its print, the print its lines, and the seam its edge. It is the cushion for a low table and a person who wants the print whole.
Three diameters: 43 cm, a seat for one; 49 cm, a generous seat; 59 cm, a cushion for two, a child's corner or a dog. Same print and fill in all three.
Questions about the japanese cushions
What is a zabuton?
The flat floor cushion of a Japanese room: the seat at a low table, in front of a window, beside a bed. The round ones here are zabuton; the straw ones are the tea-room and temple versions; the plush ones are the same idea with a face.
What are they made of?
The straw cushions are coiled rush or straw, bound with cord. The cloth cushions have a cotton-mix cover, printed or napped, over a firm synthetic wadding. The plush ones are a short-pile plush over a soft fill. The fabric line on each page says which.
How big are they?
The rush cushion is 30 cm; the printed zabuton comes in 43, 49 or 59 cm; the others are the round of a seat, and the hamster is a child's chair. Every cushion is photographed at the same scale, so the pages compare.
Are they made in Japan?
No. They are a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
Can I use them on a chair?
Yes. The square wave cushion is made for one; the round ones sit on a chair, a bench or a window seat as well as the floor. The straw ones are for the floor, a stool or a teapot.
How do I wash them?
Cloth and plush cushions: machine wash cool on a gentle cycle, dry flat, reshape when damp. Straw: keep dry, brush, air in the sun. The hamster is spot clean.
What we sell, and what we don't
Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We say so on every page, because the alternative is selling you a word instead of a garment.
