About this piece

Acid-washed grey denim shorts with a camouflage cuff sewn on at the knee, frayed

Camouflage at the knee and nothing else. These shorts are a mottled acid-washed grey denim with a five-pocket front, and at the bottom of each leg a band of camouflage denim is sewn on with the seam left frayed, front and back, ending in a raw hem. The camo is green, tan and brown, and it is a separate cloth.

It is the pair in the collection that borrows from two wardrobes, and the frayed seam between them is what makes the join look intended.

The name, Meisai, is camouflage, the pattern on the cuff, and the shorts are named for the last hand of them.

The cloth is denim, washed so the colour has already moved where a pair of shorts moves it, at the thigh and the seat, chosen because denim shorts are the ones worn most in a summer and the ones that look best at the end of one. The cut is a relaxed knee-length short with a five-pocket front, a button or zip fly and a waist that takes a belt.

Wear them with a white tee and white trainers, as in the photograph, which is the outfit every pair in this collection was photographed in and the one they are all best in. A black tee in the evening, a camp shirt open over the top, and nothing else with a pattern.

The camo band is sewn on with the raw edge out, so the seam frays and stops at the stitching, and the acid wash above is heaviest at the thigh. The rise sits at the waist.

They wash cold, inside out, with their own colour the first time, and hang to dry; the wash keeps moving at the seams, which is the point of denim, and the frayed hems fray a little more and then stop.

From across a street they are grey shorts with a camo hem. From close the seam shows its fray and the camo its four colours. They are the pair for someone who wants camo and wants it on the cuff.

The rise sits at the waist, the fly zips, and the back pockets are plain, so the camo band is the only event, front and back. The two cloths wash differently, the grey going paler and the camo holding its greens.

Sizes run from M to XXL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about the japanese shorts

What kind of shorts are these?

Denim shorts in the Japanese street style, knee-length and relaxed: washed, frayed, pieced, patched, embroidered or printed, with one pair in leather-look synthetic and one long cargo short in a woven cloth. Every page says which, and every pair was photographed with a white tee and white trainers.

Does it run small?

Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Take one size up from your usual; between two sizes, take the larger. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.

What is it made of?

Cotton denim for the denim shorts, raw or washed as the page says; a synthetic leather for the studded pair; a polyester-cotton blend for the cargo short.

Will the fraying continue?

A little, then it stops at the stitching. Raw hems are cut and washed once before they reach you, so the fray has started and settled.

Is it made in Japan?

No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.

How do I wash it?

Cold, inside out, with their own colour the first time, and hang to dry. Rhinestones go in a wash bag; the leather-look pair is wiped, not washed.

What we sell, and what we don't

Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We say so on every page, because the alternative is selling you a word instead of a garment.
