About this piece

Cream paper lantern painted with red plum blossom on black branches, round and ribbed

Red plum on cream paper, round. This lantern is a cream paper globe on a wire spiral, printed with plum blossom in a strong red on black ink branches that wrap most of the way round, thicker and bolder than the plum on the three-design lantern in the collection, with the flowers drawn as clusters of red dots on branches that fork and cross. The paper is warmer and the red is stronger.

It is the lantern in the collection with the most colour on it, and lit from inside it glows red at the branches and gold everywhere else.

The name, Umeakari, is the plum light, the lamp with the plum on it, and the lantern is that.

The lantern is a ribbed paper shade on a wire spiral that collapses flat and springs open, with a wire hanger at the top and an opening for a cord. It is a shade, not a lamp: hang it over a pendant cord with a low-heat bulb, or drop a battery LED inside, and the paper does the rest. No bulb or fitting is included.

Hang it from a ceiling hook over a cord, alone in a corner or a hallway, or in a pair over a table, and light it low: the red is strongest when the bulb is dim. Unlit it is a cream globe with a red-and-black painting; lit it is a warm sphere with the branches in shadow and the blossom glowing. It goes with the red things in the range.

The branches are the detail: drawn thick and black in the brushed manner, they fork and cross the ribs, and the blossom is clustered along them in red dots with a few buds, so the painting reads from across a room. The cream of the paper is what makes the red warm.

From across a room it is a cream globe with red and black on it. From close the black is branches, the red is blossom, and the ribs show their pleats through both. It is the lantern for a living room and a person who wants the plum in February.

Keep it dry and away from a hot bulb; paper marks with water and browns with heat. It collapses flat for storing. Dust it with a soft brush.

One size, a globe about the width of a large dinner plate. It arrives flat and opens in a minute.

Questions about the japanese lanterns

Do the paper lanterns come with a bulb?

No. They are shades on a collapsible wire spiral with a hanger. Hang one over a pendant cord with a low-heat bulb, or drop a battery LED inside. Keep any bulb cool; paper browns with heat.

How do the solar lanterns work?

A panel on the roof charges a battery by day; the LED comes on at dusk and off at dawn. No wiring, no switch. Push the stake into a lawn, a bed or a pot where the roof gets sun.

What are they made of?

The paper lanterns are ribbed paper on a wire spiral; the barrel lantern has black rims top and bottom. The garden lanterns are a black weather-resistant plastic with a solar LED inside.

Are they made in Japan?

No. They are a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.

What sizes are they?

The round lanterns are about the width of a large dinner plate. The barrel lantern comes in 15 by 25 or 20 by 25 cm. The garden lanterns stand about a forearm high on their stakes, in sets of two to eight.

How do I store them?

The paper lanterns collapse flat between their rims or hanger; keep them dry. Brush snow off the solar panels in winter so they keep charging.
