About this piece
Light-wash denim shorts cut off high and left to fray, a label at the back
These are the shorts that used to be jeans. Light-wash blue denim, faded at the thigh, cut off above the knee and left to fray in long threads, with a five-pocket front and a small black label at the back waist. The cut is relaxed through the thigh and the hem is the shortest in the collection.
It is the cut-off of the range, the simplest short there is, and the light wash is what keeps it summer: darker and it would be a pair of jeans that had an accident.
The name, Kirippa, is the cut edge, the raw end of a cloth, and the shorts are named for the hem.
The cloth is denim, washed so the colour has already moved where a pair of shorts moves it, at the thigh and the seat, chosen because denim shorts are the ones worn most in a summer and the ones that look best at the end of one. The cut is a relaxed knee-length short with a five-pocket front, a button or zip fly and a waist that takes a belt.
Wear them with a white tee and white trainers, as in the photograph, which is the outfit every pair in this collection was photographed in and the one they are all best in. A black tee in the evening, a camp shirt open over the top, and nothing else with a pattern.
The fray is cut and washed once, so it has started and settled, and the hem sits a hand above the knee on most heights. The rise sits at the waist, and the back pockets are set high.
They wash cold, inside out, with their own colour the first time, and hang to dry; the wash keeps moving at the seams, which is the point of denim, and the frayed hems fray a little more and then stop.
From across a street they are pale cut-off shorts. From close the fray shows its threads, the wash its fade at the thigh, and the label its small black square. They are the pair for a beach, a bike, and the hottest week.
They are the shortest short in the range and the one for someone with the legs for it, and the light wash forgives a day at the beach the way a dark one does not.
Sizes run from S to XL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.
Questions about the japanese shorts
What kind of shorts are these?
Denim shorts in the Japanese street style, knee-length and relaxed: washed, frayed, pieced, patched, embroidered or printed, with one pair in leather-look synthetic and one long cargo short in a woven cloth. Every page says which, and every pair was photographed with a white tee and white trainers.
Does it run small?
Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Take one size up from your usual; between two sizes, take the larger. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.
What is it made of?
Cotton denim for the denim shorts, raw or washed as the page says; a synthetic leather for the studded pair; a polyester-cotton blend for the cargo short.
Will the fraying continue?
A little, then it stops at the stitching. Raw hems are cut and washed once before they reach you, so the fray has started and settled.
Is it made in Japan?
No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
How do I wash it?
Cold, inside out, with their own colour the first time, and hang to dry. Rhinestones go in a wash bag; the leather-look pair is wiped, not washed.
What we sell, and what we don't
Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We say so on every page, because the alternative is selling you a word instead of a garment.
