About this piece

The black stand-collar jacket with gold buttons and matching trousers, the schoolboy uniform

Every Japanese schoolboy for a century has worn this jacket, and it has not changed: black, buttoned to the throat with a row of gold buttons, a stand collar that closes high, two flap pockets at the hip, and straight black trousers to go with it. Under it, a white shirt, the collar showing above the black. The gakuran came from the Prussian army by way of the Meiji government, and it still looks like it was issued rather than bought.

This set follows the pattern exactly: the jacket has five gold-tone buttons, a stiff stand collar, a small badge at the chest where a school would put its crest, and the trousers are cut straight in the same black. Worn together over a white shirt, the three pieces read as one dark line from collar to shoe.

The name, Tsumeeri, is the stand collar itself, the closed collar that gives the jacket its name in Japanese and its posture in the mirror.

The cloth is a polyester blend, firmly woven with a dry, matte hand, chosen because a uniform must hold a pleat, keep a collar flat and survive a term of washing, and this one does all three. It washes cold, hangs, and the pleats come back on the hanger.

Wear it buttoned to the top over a white shirt with the collar out, as in the photograph, and black shoes, which is the uniform. Wear it open over a white tee with the same trousers, and it is a jacket that has left school and kept the buttons. Both are correct; the second is how it is worn in Tokyo by people who never had to.

The collar is stiffened so it stands, the buttons are sewn on rather than shanked, and the trousers have a soft waist under the fly. The cloth has enough body to hold the jacket's line without shoulder pads.

From across a street it is a black jacket with a row of gold buttons and a white collar. From close the badge shows its enamel, the buttons show their crest, and the stand collar shows its hook. It is the most recognisable garment in Japanese menswear, and it is here without a school attached.

Sizes run from S to XXXL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about the japanese school uniform

Is this a real Japanese school uniform?

It is the pattern of one: the sailor top with the striped collar, the knife-pleated skirt, the gakuran with its stand collar and gold buttons. No school, no badge, no crest. The cut is the real cut, and it is sold to adults.

What comes in a set?

The top and the skirt, or the jacket and the trousers, and the bow or scarf where the page shows one. Socks, bag and shoes are sold separately on their own pages.

Does it run small?

Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Take one size up from your usual; between two sizes, take the larger. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.

What is it made of?

The uniforms are polyester blends, woven to hold a pleat and a collar. The socks are a nylon knit, the bag and the shoes a synthetic leather. Each page says which. Never silk, never wool.

Is it made in Japan?

No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.

How do I wash it?

Machine wash cold, inside out, and hang the skirt from the waistband so the pleats fall straight; they come back on the hanger. Bows and scarves come off first. Wipe the bag and shoes with a damp cloth.

What we sell, and what we don't
