About this piece
Navy baggy cargo trousers with two big flap pockets and a soft drawstring waist
Navy, wide, with two pockets the size of a paperback. These cargo trousers fall from a soft drawstring waist in a wide straight leg that bunches a little at the shoe, with a large flap pocket on each thigh and nothing else on them. The cloth is a light navy weave that creases where it wants to and looks better for it.
It is the widest cargo in the collection and the plainest, and navy is the colour that keeps a baggy trouser from looking like sportswear.
The name, Yuttari, means loose, easy, roomy, which is what the cut is, and the name is honest.
The cut is a wide cargo, cut straight from the hip without a taper, with room through the thigh and the knee and a plain hem that stacks on the shoe. The cloth is a light woven polyester-cotton blend with a dry, matte hand, chosen because a street trouser must take a crease without keeping it, wash without shrinking and weigh nothing on a hot day, and a blend does all three. The pockets have flaps with a button under them.
Wear them with a white tee and white trainers, as in the photograph, which is the outfit every pair in this collection was photographed in and the one they are all best in. A black tee in the evening, a haori or a sukajan over the top when it turns, and nothing else with a pattern below the waist.
They wash cold, inside out, and dry on a line; the cloth does not crease into a map and does not need an iron, which is the point of a trouser cut for a street rather than an office.
From across a street they are wide navy trousers with a pocket on each leg. From close the weave shows its texture, the flaps their stitching, and the drawstring its cord. They are the pair for the person who has moved on from slim and is not coming back.
The pockets are the working part: slash pockets at the hip deep enough for a phone, and a back pocket, so the trousers carry a day without a bag. The waist sits where you tie it and does not dig, and the seat has room to sit on a step.
Sizes run from M to 5XL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.
Questions about the japanese pants
What kind of trousers are these?
Japanese street trousers: cargos, joggers, wide legs and the tobi and harem cuts of the building site and the temple town, several embroidered with cranes, dragons and clouds. Every page says the cut, and every pair was photographed with a white tee and white trainers, which is how they are worn.
Does it run small?
Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Take one size up from your usual; between two sizes, take the larger. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.
What is it made of?
Mostly light polyester-cotton blends, with denim for the two denim pairs, a linen-look cotton blend for the embroidered ones, corduroy blends for the patchwork and the workwear pair, and a heat-set pleated polyester for the pleated trousers. Each page says which.
Embroidered or printed?
Each page says. The cranes, the characters and the clouds are embroidered; the dragons and the camouflage are printed; the kimono and dragon panels are printed cloth sewn in.
Is it made in Japan?
No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
How do I wash it?
Machine wash cold, inside out, and hang to dry; denim with its own colour the first time. Nothing needs ironing, and the pleated pair must not be.
What we sell, and what we don't
