About this piece
White armoured full-face mask with gold accents, mesh eyes and a segmented jaw
A face built from panels. This full-face mask is moulded in white plates that follow the bones of a face, with gold accents at the brows and down the cheeks, black mesh over the eyes so the wearer sees out and nobody sees in, a jaw in black segments that reads as a mouthguard, and a ring of white clips standing up round the crown like a crown of teeth. It fastens with an adjustable strap.
It is the one mask in the collection that owes nothing to a festival, and it belongs to the techwear and the strapped sneakers in the range.
The name, Kikai, is the machine, and the mask is a face made as one.
The mask is moulded in a hard plastic in several panels joined and finished white, with the gold applied as paint, the eyes covered in a fine black mesh set behind the openings, and the jaw and the crown clips moulded separately and fitted. It fastens with an adjustable strap at the back and it is ventilated at the jaw.
Wear it strapped, with the mesh over the eyes, which gives full sight out and a black stare in, at a convention, a party, a shoot or a ride. It goes with the techwear trousers and the strapped sneakers in the range, and with an all-black outfit where the white is the point.
The mesh is the detail: it sits behind the eye openings and it reads as black from outside, so the mask has no eyes, only sockets, and the gold brows above them are what give it an expression. The ring of clips round the crown is decorative and it is what people photograph.
Hung on a wall it is a face in the room, and that is how most of them end up: on a nail by the door, over a desk, in a hallway where a guest meets it first. It is photographed at the same scale as every mask in the collection, so the pages compare.
Wipe with a soft dry cloth; the mesh can be brushed. Keep it out of a hot car, which warps plastic.
From across a room it is a white face with no eyes. From close the panels show their joins, the gold its lines, and the mesh its weave. It is the mask for a person who wants the future and not the past.
One size, adult. The mask covers the whole face and the strap adjusts.
Questions about the japanese masks
Which masks can be worn and which are for the wall?
The hannya, fox, cat, tengu, hyottoko, Noh, samurai half masks, the ninja mask and the armoured mask all have straps and are worn. The six unpainted wooden masks are carved to hang; they have cord holes, not straps.
What are they made of?
Hannya: painted resin. Fox and cat: hand-painted PVC. Samurai half masks: painted latex. Wooden masks: a single block of pale wood, unpainted. The others are moulded and painted. The fabric line on each page says which.
Are they made in Japan?
No. They are a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
What size are they?
One size, adult; the fox and hyottoko masks fit a teenager too. Straps adjust. The large wooden folk mask is bigger than a face; every mask is photographed at the same scale, so the pages compare.
What is the difference between a hannya and an oni?
A hannya is the Noh mask of a woman turned demon by jealousy, with horns, gold eyes and a mouth that does not close; its colour, red, green or blue, marks how far she has gone. An oni is the mountain demon of folklore, and the wooden one here is that.
How do I look after them?
Wipe with a soft dry cloth. Keep resin, PVC and latex out of a hot car and direct sun. Dust the wooden masks with a brush and keep them away from radiators and damp.
What we sell, and what we don't
Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We say so on every page, because the alternative is selling you a word instead of a garment.
