About this piece

A frost-white dragon over the shoulders, and a figure standing under its jaw

The dragon is not the only thing on this jacket, and that is what sets it apart from every other dragon in the collection. Its head fills the upper back, pale as frost, with antlers in bone and gold and a mane that turns into cloud. Below the jaw, small and upright, stands a figure in blue robes with long hair, calm, as if the dragon had been summoned rather than met. The whole scene is drawn in the fine, coloured-ink manner of an old scroll, and printed on a white ground so that the blues stay cold.

The front takes the edges of the cloud. Blue washes and pale coils run down both panels and the sleeves, with the white showing through, and a few gold strands of mane drift across the chest. From the front it is a soft blue-and-white abstract. From the back it is a story, and people will want to know it.

It is printed, not embroidered, and the printing keeps three registers at once: the fine gold line of the antlers, the soft grey wash of the cloud, and the tiny figure with its face intact. The cloth is polyester, which holds that level of detail through washing and keeps the ground white rather than cream. It is light, a layer for warm evenings rather than cold ones.

The cut is a short open kimono jacket: flat edge down both fronts, no fastening, wide sleeves to the elbow, hem at the hip. Over a white tee, the white of the tee and the white of the ground merge and the dragon seems to wrap the whole torso. Over pale blue, the print goes cooler still.

Keep everything else pale and plain. White trousers, light denim, cream linen. This is a jacket built around a picture, and the picture is on the back, so the person behind you in the queue gets the best view. Wear it open and let them.

People will ask who the figure is. The honest answer is that the print does not say, and we would rather not invent a legend for it. A robed figure standing calm under a dragon is an old image in East Asian painting, the scholar or the immortal who has nothing to fear from the creature, and that is enough of a story. It is the reason this jacket feels serene rather than fierce, and why it works in white.

Sizes run from M to 5XL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about the kimono jacket

Is a kimono jacket the same as a haori?

No. A haori has a collar band folded back on itself and is worn open over a kimono. A kimono jacket has a plain faced edge, closes with a single toggle or tie, and is cut to sit over a T-shirt.

Does it run small?

Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Between two sizes, take the larger. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.

Is it silk?

No. Each piece is cotton, linen or polyester, as stated in its description and on the inner label. We never sell silk as something else, or something else as silk.

Is it made in Japan?

No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.

How do I wear it?

Open, over a plain T-shirt, with denim or dark trousers. Elbow-length sleeves make it a spring and autumn layer; long sleeves carry into winter over a knit.

How do I wash it?

Machine wash cold, inside out, with similar colours. Hang to dry. Iron on low, inside out over any print or embroidery.

What we sell, and what we don't

Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We say so on every page, because the alternative is selling you a word instead of a garment.
