About this piece
Heathered grey, woven from pale and dark thread, the softest yukata in the range
Grey is the colour of clothes you actually wear, and this yukata is cut from the softest version of it. The cloth is woven from pale and dark grey threads set close together, so the surface reads as a warm, mottled marl rather than a flat colour, with a faint stripe running the length of it that shows only up close. It looks like a tweed from a distance and like a summer cloth in the hand. The obi is grey too, striped in three tones, wide and flat.
It is the most relaxed piece in the collection, the one that feels like a favourite shirt rather than a garment with rules. Where the black and navy yukata are for evenings, this one is for the whole day: breakfast, the garden, a walk to the shops with sandals on.
The name, Hainezumi, is an old colour name, the grey of ash, of a mouse, the soft neutral that Japanese cloth has used for everyday wear for centuries because it hides the day and goes with everything.
The weave is polyester with a dry, slightly brushed hand, chosen because a marl needs to stay a marl through washing, without the pale threads going yellow or the dark ones going flat, and because a yukata should weigh nothing in the heat. It is not lined.
The obi is included. Cross the fronts left over right, wrap the obi twice at the waist and knot it at the hip. The stripe on the obi lines up with the faint stripe in the cloth, which is a small thing, and the reason the set looks like a set.
The cut is long, falling to the ankle, with wide square sleeves and the room to move. Worn at home it is the robe you reach for. Worn out it is a summer outfit that reads calm, and it goes with grey, white, black and anything made of denim.
At three metres it is a grey robe. At thirty centimetres the marl separates into its pale and dark threads and the faint stripe appears, running the length of the cloth. It is the difference between a colour and a texture, and this yukata is a texture.
Sizes run from M to XL, by height. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.
Questions about the kimono
Is it a kimono or a yukata?
Both are the same shape: a long robe crossed left over right and tied with an obi. A yukata is the unlined summer version in a light woven cloth; the satin pieces here are printed kimono robes. Every page says which it is, and the obi is included with each.
Does it run small?
Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Men's yukata are sized by height; between two sizes, take the larger. Women's kimono are one size, with a wrap front that adjusts at the obi. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.
Is it silk?
No. Every piece in this collection is polyester, woven for the yukata and satin for the printed kimono, as stated on its page and on the inner label. We never sell silk as something else, or something else as silk.
Is it made in Japan?
No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
How do I wear it?
Cross the left front over the right, wrap the obi twice at the waist and knot it at the back or the hip. At home it is a robe; out, with sandals, it is the whole outfit. A plain T-shirt underneath if the evening cools.
How do I wash it?
Machine wash cold, inside out, with similar colours, on a gentle cycle for the satin pieces. Hang to dry. Iron on low, inside out over any print.
