About this piece
Sneakers printed with columns of text along the sole, in white or black
Text along the sole, in columns, like a page of newsprint wrapped round the heel. These sneakers are a grey-and-white mesh upper with coloured tabs at the lace in blue, red and yellow, a yellow stitch along the side, and a printed band of small text running from the heel round the sole on a translucent platform. The black version puts the same text on a white band with purple, yellow and red tabs.
It is the sneaker in the collection with the most to read, and the text is small on purpose: from a distance it is a texture, and only up close does it become type.
The name, Sumiji, is the ink character, the printed letter, and the shoe has a page of them.
The sole is a translucent moulded platform with a deep tread and a printed band round its edge, the upper is a mix of mesh, synthetic panels and a knit collar, and the shoe is cushioned through the midsole, so it walks a city all day. It is the chunky sneaker, the shape Japan made its own, cut for a wide foot.
Wear them with a white sock pulled up, as in the photograph, which is how every pair in this collection was shot and how they are worn in Tokyo: the sock is part of the shoe. White trousers, black jeans, the cropped pants from the range, and nothing else on the foot that argues.
The tabs at the lace are stiff synthetic in three colours, and they hold the lace flat; the text on the sole is printed into the band, not on top of it, so it does not scuff. The yellow stitch along the side is contrast thread.
The last is a Japanese one, wider at the toe box than a European sneaker and lower at the instep, which is part of why they run small: the length is short and the width is generous. A wide foot will be comfortable; a narrow one will want the thicker sock.
Wipe them with a damp cloth; do not machine wash. A soft brush for the mesh, a cloth for the panels, and they are ready for the next day.
From across a street they are grey or black sneakers with coloured tabs. From close the text shows its columns, the tabs their three colours, and the sole its translucence. They are the sneaker for the person who reads their shoes.
Sizes run from EU 39 to 44. They are cut to Asian sizing and run small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.
Questions about the japanese sneakers
What is a Japanese sneaker?
A sneaker designed in the Tokyo streetwear tradition: chunky soles, layered panels, knit collars, colour used with intent and a white sock worn pulled up.
Do they run small?
Yes. They are cut on an Asian last, shorter in length and wider at the toe than a European sneaker. Take one size up from your usual; between two sizes, take the larger.
What are they made of?
Synthetic, mesh, knit or brushed uppers on moulded rubber or EVA soles, depending on the pair. The fabric line on each product page says which.
Are they made in Japan?
No. They are a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
How do I wear them?
With a white sock pulled up, as photographed, and a trouser that shows the shoe: cropped, tapered or a jogger with a ribbed cuff.
How do I clean them?
Wipe with a damp cloth and a soft brush for the mesh. Do not machine wash, and keep them out of direct heat.
What we sell, and what we don't
Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We say so on every page, because the alternative is selling you a word instead of a garment.
