About this piece

Cream long-sleeved or white short-sleeved sailor top with a bordeaux bow, navy skirt

One set, two terms. The winter top is cream with long sleeves; the summer top is white with short sleeves; both have a navy sailor collar edged in white stripes and a bordeaux bow at the chest, and both sit over the same navy skirt in knife pleats to mid-thigh. You choose the season when you order, and the skirt is the same in either.

Cream is the softer of the two, warmer against the skin and kinder in a photograph. White is the sharper, and the short sleeve is the one for July. The bordeaux bow is the same on both and reads deeper than a bright red, which is the point of it.

The name, Azuki, is the red bean, the deep wine-red of the sweet paste in Japanese pastry, and the bow is that colour.

The bow is a separate piece, fastened at the collar, so it can come off. The cloth is a polyester blend, firmly woven with a dry, matte hand, chosen because a uniform must hold a pleat, keep a collar flat and survive a term of washing, and this one does all three. It washes cold, hangs, and the pleats come back on the hanger.

Wear it as a set with white high socks and black lace-up shoes, or the top alone over jeans with the bow off; the cream one makes a good blouse, the white one a good summer shirt. The navy skirt alone goes with anything.

The collar lies flat and wide, the cuffs on the long sleeve are striped, and the skirt sits on a flat band with knife pleats all turned one way.

From across a street it is a pale top with a navy collar and a dark red bow over a navy skirt. From close the stripes are three, the bow shows its wine, and the pleats are even. It is the sailor set in the most classic colours, with a choice of sleeve.

The skirt sits at mid-thigh in both versions and the top is cropped to the waist. With white socks and lace-up shoes it is the uniform; with the bow off and a cardigan over it, it is a day.

The cream is a warm one, closer to ivory than to beige, and the navy of the collar and the skirt are the same dye. The bordeaux bow is the same on both tops, so the two versions read as the same set in two seasons, which they are.

Sizes run from S to XXL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about the japanese school uniform

Is this a real Japanese school uniform?

It is the pattern of one: the sailor top with the striped collar, the knife-pleated skirt, the gakuran with its stand collar and gold buttons. No school, no badge, no crest. The cut is the real cut, and it is sold to adults.

What comes in a set?

The top and the skirt, or the jacket and the trousers, and the bow or scarf where the page shows one. Socks, bag and shoes are sold separately on their own pages.

Does it run small?

Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Take one size up from your usual; between two sizes, take the larger. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.

What is it made of?

The uniforms are polyester blends, woven to hold a pleat and a collar. The socks are a nylon knit, the bag and the shoes a synthetic leather. Each page says which. Never silk, never wool.

Is it made in Japan?

No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.

How do I wash it?

Machine wash cold, inside out, and hang the skirt from the waistband so the pleats fall straight; they come back on the hanger. Bows and scarves come off first. Wipe the bag and shoes with a damp cloth.

What we sell, and what we don't

Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We say so on every page, because the alternative is selling you a word instead of a garment.
