About this piece

Paint dragged across a shirt in red, blue, yellow and rust, over a faint check

The print on this shirt looks like a painter's drop cloth. Strokes and washes of red, blue, yellow, teal and rust are layered across a faint brown gingham check, dragged and scraped as if with a wide knife, with the check showing through where the paint is thin. It runs across the whole shirt, front, back and sleeves, and no two areas repeat.

It is the abstract shirt of the collection and the one that looks least like a print, because the strokes have the thickness and the edges of real paint, printed.

The name, Enogu, is paint, the pigment in the tube, and the shirt is what happened to it.

The cut is a camp shirt: an open collar that lies flat, a straight hem to wear untucked, short sleeves cut wide, and a body cut boxy through the chest so it hangs rather than clings. It is the shape of the Japanese summer shirt since the fifties, and it has not needed changing. The cloth is a polyester-cotton blend with a smooth, dry hand, chosen because an all-over print needs a flat ground to stay sharp and a summer shirt needs to wash cold, dry fast and come out of the machine without an iron. It does.

Wear it open over a white tee or buttoned to the second button with white trousers, as in the photograph, and plain shoes. Nothing else with a pattern; the shirt has used the day's allowance. The colours go with white, with black, and with a plain trouser in any of them.

From across a street it is a colour field. From close the check appears under the paint, the strokes show their scrape marks, and the layers show which colour went on last. It is the shirt for someone who would rather wear a painting than a picture.

The paint is placed so the reddest strokes land on the front and the bluest on the back, with the check showing most at the hem, and the collar is cut from a corner where the check shows through, so the shirt reads as painted cloth rather than printed paint. It is a print with layers.

It washes cold, inside out, and dries on a hanger in an hour; the print does not fade, and there is nothing to iron unless you want the collar sharp, in which case a cool iron on the back of it takes a minute.

Sizes run from M to XXL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about the japanese shirts

What kind of shirts are these?

Short-sleeved camp shirts and boxy button-ups in the Japanese street style: open collars, straight hems to wear untucked, and prints or embroidery that cover the whole shirt. A tartan, a work shirt and a football jersey sit alongside them, and every page says which.

Does it run small?

Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Take one size up from your usual; between two sizes, take the larger. Several shirts are one size, cut boxy, and their pages say so.

Printed or embroidered?

Each page says. Most are printed edge to edge; the goose and the rose shirts are embroidered, and the stitches stand off the cloth.

What is it made of?

Polyester-cotton blends, with a washed cotton blend for the work shirt and a polyester kit cloth for the jersey. Never silk.

Is it made in Japan?

No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.

How do I wash it?

Machine wash cold, inside out, and hang to dry. Nothing needs ironing; a cool iron on the back of the collar if you like it sharp.

What we sell, and what we don't

Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We say so on every page, because the alternative is selling you a word instead of a garment.
