About this piece
Fine-pleated straight trousers that fall like a column, in grey or black
Pleats, hundreds of them, running the length of the leg. These trousers are cut from a fine permanently pleated cloth, the kind a Japanese designer made famous, so the surface is a column of narrow vertical ridges from the waist to the cropped hem, and the trousers fall straight and move like water. A soft waist, slash pockets, no other detail. Grey, as in the photograph, or black.
It is the most refined pair in the collection and the lightest, and the pleats are what make them: they give a plain trouser a texture that catches every light in a room.
The name, Hida, is the pleat, the fold, and the trousers are made of them.
The cut is an easy straight leg with a soft waist and a hem cropped to the ankle bone, so the trainer shows. The cloth is a fine polyester heat-set into permanent pleats, chosen because only polyester holds a pleat through washing, and because the cloth is so light it weighs nothing. The pleats do not need pressing and cannot be lost.
Wear them with a plain tee and trainers, as in the photograph, or with a fine knit and leather shoes for the evening. They go with white, black, grey and any jacket in the range, and they do not need a belt unless you want one.
They wash cold, inside out, and hang to dry, and the pleats fall back into line on the hanger. Do not iron them.
From across a street they are grey or black trousers with a shimmer. From close the pleats separate into their ridges, each a millimetre wide, and the cloth shows its lightness. They are the pair for someone who wants a trouser that is a texture.
The waist is a flat elastic with a drawstring inside, so nothing shows on the outside, and the pockets are set into the side seams so the pleats run unbroken past them. The hem is cut clean, without a turn, because a pleat should end in a line.
They pack flat, weigh nothing in a bag and come out looking exactly as they went in, which makes them the trousers in the collection for a trip. The grey is a warm light grey, the black a true black.
Sizes run from M to XXL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.

What kind of trousers are these?
Japanese street trousers: cargos, joggers, wide legs and the tobi and harem cuts of the building site and the temple town, several embroidered with cranes, dragons and clouds. Every page says the cut, and every pair was photographed with a white tee and white trainers, which is how they are worn.
Does it run small?
Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Take one size up from your usual; between two sizes, take the larger. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.
What is it made of?
Mostly light polyester-cotton blends, with denim for the two denim pairs, a linen-look cotton blend for the embroidered ones, corduroy blends for the patchwork and the workwear pair, and a heat-set pleated polyester for the pleated trousers. Each page says which.
Embroidered or printed?
Each page says. The cranes, the characters and the clouds are embroidered; the dragons and the camouflage are printed; the kimono and dragon panels are printed cloth sewn in.
Is it made in Japan?
No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
How do I wash it?
Machine wash cold, inside out, and hang to dry; denim with its own colour the first time. Nothing needs ironing, and the pleated pair must not be.
