About this piece

Open steel ring of a dragon's claw gripping the finger with four talons

The claw holds the finger. This ring is a dragon's foot in steel, four talons with scaled knuckles wrapping round from the back of the finger and pointing forward at the front, the tips polished and the scales darkened. There is no band; the talons are the ring, and they are open where they meet.

It is the ring in the collection that is least like a ring, and the one that looks most like something that has hold of you.

The name, Tsume, is the claw, the talon, and the ring is four of them.

The ring is stainless steel, cast as one piece, the talons about 25 mm from base to tip, the scales darkened and the tips polished. The sizes run in three steps.

Wear it on the index or middle finger of either hand, and on its own; the talons need the room. It goes with the dragon sukajan in the range and with black, and it is the ring to wear when you want a hand to be noticed.

The knuckles are the detail: each talon has two, scaled and jointed, and the tips are cut to a point and polished so they catch the light. The talons do not close, and the gap at the front is part of the design.

From across a table it is a claw on a hand. From close the scales show their rows, the knuckles their joints, and the tips their polish. It is the ring for someone who wants the dragon's grip.

Every ring in the collection is photographed on the same pale ground at the same scale, so the pages compare with each other: what looks big here is big on the hand. The measurements given are taken across the face, not round the finger.

Steel does not tarnish, does not turn a finger green and does not mind water, so this ring can be worn in the shower and the sea and wiped dry after. A soft cloth is all the care it needs; the darkened recesses are a finish, not dirt, and they stay.

Sizes are given as the inside circumference in millimetres: 57, 59, 62. Wrap a strip of paper round the finger where the ring will sit, mark where it meets, and measure the strip flat. If you are between two sizes and the ring is wide, take the larger; a wide band needs more room than a thin one.

Questions about the japanese rings

What is a Japanese ring?

A ring built on Japanese imagery: dragons, koi, guardian lions, temple deities, sutras and Sanskrit seed syllables, helmets and masks. Most are sculpted in the round rather than set with stones.

How do I find my size?

Sizes are the inside circumference in millimetres. Wrap a strip of paper round the finger, mark where it meets and measure it flat. For a wide band, take the larger of two sizes. Open bands are one size and adjust by hand.

Are they silver or steel?

Both, and each page says which. The silver rings are sterling silver stamped 925 inside the band; the steel rings are stainless steel, some with a black or gold-toned finish. Neither turns a finger green.

Are they made in Japan?

No. They are a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.

Will the dark finish wear off?

The darkening in the recesses is deliberate and stays; the high points polish with wear, which is how the relief is meant to read. Gold-toned and black coatings soften over years of daily wear.

How do I care for them?

Wipe with a soft cloth. Silver darkens with time and a silver cloth brings it back; take silver off for the sea and the shower. Steel can be worn in water and dried after.
