About this piece

Silver band with a dragon in relief on a polished ring, stamped 925 inside

A dragon on a band, not a dragon as a band. This ring is a polished silver band with a raised outer face carrying a dragon in relief, its body scaled and its head turned, on a darkened, textured ground, and the inner ring plain and bright with the 925 stamp inside. It reads as a band from the palm side and as a dragon from the top.

It is the ring in the collection for someone who wants the dragon and wants a band under it, and it is the one to wear every day.

The name, Kaiten, is rotation, the turning of the dragon round the band, and the beast goes round it.

The ring is sterling silver, stamped 925 inside the band, about 9 mm wide, the outer face cast in relief and darkened in the recesses, the inner ring polished and stamped. It is a heavier ring than it looks.

Wear it on the middle or ring finger of either hand, on its own or next to a plain band. It goes with a shirt and with a sukajan, and it is a ring that reads as jewellery rather than as a figure.

The texture on the ground is the detail: it is a fine stipple that reads as cloud or water depending on the light, and the dragon's scales are cut over it in rows. The head turns back towards the tail.

From across a table it is a silver band with a dark pattern. From close the pattern is a dragon, the scales show their rows, and the inside its stamp. It is the ring for someone who wants the dragon kept to a band.

Every ring in the collection is photographed on the same pale ground at the same scale, so the pages compare with each other: what looks big here is big on the hand. The measurements given are taken across the face, not round the finger.

Silver darkens with time and skin, and this ring is meant to: the recesses are already blackened so the relief reads, and the high points polish themselves against your hand. Wipe with a soft cloth; a silver cloth brings the shine back when you want it. Take it off for the sea and the shower.

Sizes are given as the inside circumference in millimetres: 54, 57, 59, 62, 64, 67. Wrap a strip of paper round the finger where the ring will sit, mark where it meets, and measure the strip flat. If you are between two sizes and the ring is wide, take the larger; a wide band needs more room than a thin one.

Questions about the japanese rings

What is a Japanese ring?

A ring built on Japanese imagery: dragons, koi, guardian lions, temple deities, sutras and Sanskrit seed syllables, helmets and masks. Most are sculpted in the round rather than set with stones.

How do I find my size?

Sizes are the inside circumference in millimetres. Wrap a strip of paper round the finger, mark where it meets and measure it flat. For a wide band, take the larger of two sizes. Open bands are one size and adjust by hand.

Are they silver or steel?

Both, and each page says which. The silver rings are sterling silver stamped 925 inside the band; the steel rings are stainless steel, some with a black or gold-toned finish. Neither turns a finger green.

Are they made in Japan?

No. They are a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.

Will the dark finish wear off?

The darkening in the recesses is deliberate and stays; the high points polish with wear, which is how the relief is meant to read. Gold-toned and black coatings soften over years of daily wear.

How do I care for them?

Wipe with a soft cloth. Silver darkens with time and a silver cloth brings it back; take silver off for the sea and the shower. Steel can be worn in water and dried after.
