About this piece
A white sailor top with a dark green collar over a green pleated skirt
Dark green is the sailor uniform of the private schools, the colour that reads a little older than navy and a little more expensive, and this set wears it. The top is white, long-sleeved and cropped at the waist, with a sailor collar in deep green edged in white stripes and cuffs banded to match. The skirt is the same green, knife-pleated to mid-thigh. At the chest, you choose: a green bow tied wide, or a green scarf knotted through the collar and hanging to the waist.
The two styles are two moods. The bow is the classic, symmetrical and sweet. The scarf is the older style, the one from the uniforms of the 1930s, and it hangs like a tie.
The name, Tokiwa, means evergreen, the green of the pine that does not change with the season, and the set is that green.
The bow or the scarf is a separate piece, fastened at the collar, so either can come off. The cloth is a polyester blend, firmly woven with a dry, matte hand, chosen because a uniform must hold a pleat, keep a collar flat and survive a term of washing, and this one does all three. It washes cold, hangs, and the pleats come back on the hanger.
Wear it as a set with white high socks and black lace-up shoes, or the top alone over jeans with the neckwear off, which makes it a white blouse with a green collar. The green skirt alone goes with a black jumper in winter.
The collar lies flat and wide, the cuffs are banded, and the skirt sits on a flat band with knife pleats all turned one way. The green of the collar and the green of the skirt are the same dye.
From across a street it is white with a green collar over a green skirt. From close the stripes are three, the pleats are even, and the bow or the scarf shows its knot. It is the sailor set that looks most like it belongs to a school with a gate.
The skirt sits at mid-thigh and the top is cropped to the waist. With the 40 cm socks in white and black lace-up shoes, the proportion is the one the uniform is drawn with.
It comes in XS as well as the usual sizes, which the other sets do not, and the green is a deep one, closer to a bottle than a leaf.
Sizes run from XS to XL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.
Questions about the japanese school uniform
Is this a real Japanese school uniform?
It is the pattern of one: the sailor top with the striped collar, the knife-pleated skirt, the gakuran with its stand collar and gold buttons. No school, no badge, no crest. The cut is the real cut, and it is sold to adults.
What comes in a set?
The top and the skirt, or the jacket and the trousers, and the bow or scarf where the page shows one. Socks, bag and shoes are sold separately on their own pages.
Does it run small?
Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Take one size up from your usual; between two sizes, take the larger. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.
What is it made of?
The uniforms are polyester blends, woven to hold a pleat and a collar. The socks are a nylon knit, the bag and the shoes a synthetic leather. Each page says which. Never silk, never wool.
Is it made in Japan?
No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
How do I wash it?
Machine wash cold, inside out, and hang the skirt from the waistband so the pleats fall straight; they come back on the hanger. Bows and scarves come off first. Wipe the bag and shoes with a damp cloth.
What we sell, and what we don't
Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We say so on every page, because the alternative is selling you a word instead of a garment.
