About this piece
Hokusai print of Tago Bay, fishing boats on a rough sea under a tall Fuji
Boats on a rough sea, and the mountain tall behind them. This is Hokusai's view of Tago Bay, on the coast road south of Edo: two fishing boats ride a sea drawn in curling blue waves in the foreground, a green shore with trees and a village lies beyond, and Fuji rises tall and blue with a white cap over everything against a pale sky. It is one of the views where the sea and the mountain share the picture equally.
It is the print for a person who wants both, and it is the one that goes in a room facing the sea.
The name, Tagonoura, is Tago Bay, the shore of the print's title, and the picture is the bay on a rough morning.
The print is reproduced from the woodblock print on a textured canvas, stretched round a wooden frame with the image wrapping the edges, so it hangs without a frame and without glass. The colours are the print's own: the deep Prussian blue, the cream of the paper, the greens and the rose of the sky. The cartouche with the series title and the artist's signature is printed in the corner, as on the Edo sheet.
Hang it on a single nail at eye level, alone or in a row of three with two others from the series, which is how they look best. It goes above a desk, a sofa or a bed.
The waves are the detail: drawn as curling blue shapes with white edges, they lift the two boats at angles, and the fishermen in them lean to the roll. The mountain behind is drawn in a flat deep blue with the snow cap in white and a long grey slope at the right.
Every print in the collection is photographed on the same wall at the same scale, so the pages compare.
Dust with a soft dry cloth or a brush; do not wet it. Keep it out of direct sun, which fades the blue over years, and away from a radiator, which loosens the canvas.
From across a room it is a blue mountain over a blue sea. From close the waves show their curls, the boats their tilt, and the shore its village. It is the print for a person who likes the sea rough and the mountain still.
Three sizes: 40 by 60 cm, 50 by 75 cm and 60 by 90 cm. The smallest suits a shelf or a small wall, the middle a desk, the largest a wall on its own. The image is the same in all three.
Questions about the japanese wall art
Are these original prints?
No. They are reproductions of Hokusai's Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, woodblock prints from the 1830s that are long out of copyright, printed on canvas or cloth from the images. Every page says so.
Canvas or poster?
The single views are printed on a textured canvas stretched round a wooden frame, with the image wrapping the edges, so they hang without a frame or glass. The three triptychs are cloth panels held in wooden hanging rails with a cord.
What sizes are there?
Singles: 40 by 60, 50 by 75 or 60 by 90 cm. Triptychs: three panels each of 30 by 60, 40 by 85 or 50 by 102 cm. Every print is photographed at the same scale, so the pages compare.
Are they made in Japan?
No. They are a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
How do I hang them?
A single canvas hangs on one nail or picture hook. A triptych hangs on three nails at the same height, a finger's width apart; the gaps become part of the picture.
How do I look after them?
Dust with a soft dry cloth; do not wet. Keep out of direct sun, which fades the blue over years, and away from radiators. Roll a triptych panel if it comes down; never fold it.
What we sell, and what we don't
Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We say so on every page, because the alternative is selling you a word instead of a garment.
