About this piece
Hokusai print of the great wave off Kanagawa, three boats under the claw of foam
The wave. This is Hokusai's Under the Wave off Kanagawa, the most reproduced picture in the history of art: a great wave rises at the left and curls over with its foam drawn as claws, three long boats of rowers cling to the water beneath it, a second wave rises at the right, and Fuji sits small and white in the trough between them under a grey sky. The mountain is the point of the series and the wave is what everyone remembers.
It is the print people come to the collection for, and it is here in the print's own blue, with the boats in it.
The name, Daiha, is the great wave, and the picture is it.
The print is reproduced from the woodblock print on a textured canvas, stretched round a wooden frame with the image wrapping the edges, so it hangs without a frame and without glass. The colours are the print's own: the deep Prussian blue, the cream of the paper, the greens and the rose of the sky. The cartouche with the series title and the artist's signature is printed in the corner, as on the Edo sheet.
Hang it on a single nail at eye level, alone or in a row of three with two others from the series, which is how they look best. It goes above a desk, a sofa or a bed.
The foam is the detail: the crest of the wave is drawn as a row of curling fingers that reach down over the boats, and the spray is a scatter of white dots across the sky. The rowers are drawn bent flat in their boats, and the mountain between the waves is the same shape as the wave's own trough.
Every print in the collection is photographed on the same wall at the same scale, so the pages compare.
Dust with a soft dry cloth or a brush; do not wet it. Keep it out of direct sun, which fades the blue over years, and away from a radiator, which loosens the canvas.
From across a room it is the wave, which everyone knows. From close the foam shows its fingers, the rowers their backs, and the mountain its smallness. It is the print for a person who has seen it a thousand times and wants it on the wall anyway.
Three sizes: 40 by 60 cm, 50 by 75 cm and 60 by 90 cm. The smallest suits a shelf or a small wall, the middle a desk, the largest a wall on its own. The image is the same in all three.
Questions about the japanese wall art
Are these original prints?
No. They are reproductions of Hokusai's Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, woodblock prints from the 1830s that are long out of copyright, printed on canvas or cloth from the images. Every page says so.
Canvas or poster?
The single views are printed on a textured canvas stretched round a wooden frame, with the image wrapping the edges, so they hang without a frame or glass. The three triptychs are cloth panels held in wooden hanging rails with a cord.
What sizes are there?
Singles: 40 by 60, 50 by 75 or 60 by 90 cm. Triptychs: three panels each of 30 by 60, 40 by 85 or 50 by 102 cm. Every print is photographed at the same scale, so the pages compare.
Are they made in Japan?
No. They are a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
How do I hang them?
A single canvas hangs on one nail or picture hook. A triptych hangs on three nails at the same height, a finger's width apart; the gaps become part of the picture.
How do I look after them?
Dust with a soft dry cloth; do not wet. Keep out of direct sun, which fades the blue over years, and away from radiators. Roll a triptych panel if it comes down; never fold it.
What we sell, and what we don't
Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We say so on every page, because the alternative is selling you a word instead of a garment.
