About this piece

The thunder god with his ring of drums across the back, beige or red sleeves

The figure on the back of this sukajan is the thunder god of the old screens, red-skinned with a grey mane, standing in a swirl of grey cloud with his ring of gold drums round him and the sticks in his hands, among plum blossom embroidered in cream and gold that spills onto the sleeves. On the chest, a single drum with its gold tomoe on the left and a cloud on the right. The sleeves are beige in the photograph, with gold-striped ribbing; the other version has them in red.

It is the sukajan with the most famous figure in Japanese painting on it, the god who beats the drums that make the thunder, and he has been embroidered with his mouth open.

The name, Raiko, is thunder light, the flash before the drum, and the god is the one who makes both.

Every motif is embroidered, not printed, in dense satin stitch that stands off the cloth and catches the light differently as you move; that is the whole point of a sukajan, and it is the reason the jacket weighs what it does. The body is a satin blend with a soft sheen and a light quilted lining, and the collar, cuffs and hem are a ribbed knit, which is the construction the sukajan has had since the first ones were sewn for American sailors in Yokosuka in the late forties. It zips at the front and has a slash pocket at each hip. It washes cold, inside out, on a gentle cycle, and dries flat.

Wear it over a white tee and white trousers, as in the photograph, or over black for the red god to be the colour. Nothing else with a pattern.

From across a street it is a black-and-beige bomber with a red figure on the back. From close the god has every strand of his mane, the drums every tomoe in gold, and the blossom every petal. It is the sukajan for someone who has seen the screens and wants the loud one.

The sleeves are set in raglan, and the blossom on the back runs onto them so the arms carry the plum tree down to the elbow. The drum on the chest is the same drum as the ring on the back, and the tomoe on it is the crest of the god.

Sizes run from M to XXXL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about the sukajan jacket

What is a sukajan?

The Japanese souvenir jacket: a satin bomber with a ribbed collar, cuffs and hem, embroidered on the back and chest with dragons, tigers, koi, cranes and gods, first sewn in Yokosuka for American sailors after the war. Ours keep the cut and the embroidery; a few are the same idea on a flight jacket, a denim jacket or a velvet-look cloth, and their pages say so.

Is the embroidery real?

Yes. Every motif is embroidered, not printed, in dense satin stitch. That is why the jackets weigh what they do and why the back catches the light.

Is it reversible?

No. None of our sukajan is reversible. The lining is a lining.

Does it run small?

Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Take one size up from your usual; between two sizes, take the larger. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.

What is it made of?

A satin blend for the classic sukajan, a matte nylon blend for the flight-jacket versions, washed denim for the one denim jacket, and a velvet-look or leather-look synthetic where the page says so. Never silk.

Is it made in Japan?

No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.

How do I wash it?

Cold, inside out, on a gentle cycle, and dry flat; never tumble an embroidered jacket. The leather-look jacket is wiped, not washed.

What we sell, and what we don't

Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We say so on every page, because the alternative is selling you a word instead of a garment.
