About this piece

Clasp purse with a plush lucky cat sewn on the front, in eight colours

A cat on a purse, and a purse that clicks. This is a gamaguchi, the Japanese clasp purse with a metal kiss-lock frame that opens with a pinch and closes with a click, in a printed crepe cloth with a plush beckoning cat sewn on the front, eyes closed and paw raised, holding a fish, a fan, a bag of coins or a mallet depending on the colour, and a small charm hanging from the clasp on a cord. Eight colours; the photographs show six.

It is the smallest object in the shop with the most personality, and the cat is what does it.

The name is the Japanese one, and it means the toad's mouth, which is what the frame looks like when it is open. Every Japanese grandmother has one.

The body is a printed crepe cloth with a textured surface, lined, sewn to a metal frame with two ball knobs that snap together, and the cat is a separate plush piece in the same crepe, sewn to the front with its paw and its object in relief. The charm is a small printed tag on a cord with a bell.

Carry it in a bag or a pocket for coins and a key, or on its own by the charm's cord, which is how a child carries it. It holds a folded note, a handful of coins and a card.

The eight colours are eight cats: the pink cat holds a fish, the purple a fan, the white-and-red a fish, the yellow a bag, the red a mallet, the blue a fan. Each cloth is a different print in the cat's colour, and each charm matches.

The clasp is the detail: two metal balls that snap together with a click you can hear, the sound of a Japanese purse, and the frame is shaped so the purse opens wide and stands. The cat's paw is raised in the beckoning gesture, which is for luck with money, on a purse.

From across a table it is a round printed purse with a cat on it. From close the cat shows its stitched face, the clasp its two balls, and the charm its bell. It is the purse for a child, a grandmother, or anyone who wants luck with their change.

Spot clean only; the plush and the frame do not go in water. Wipe the frame with a dry cloth.

One size. It fits in the palm of a hand and holds coins, a key and a card. The charm is about the size of a thumb.

Questions about the japanese bags

What is a randoseru?

The boxy, stiff-sided backpack every Japanese child carries through primary school: a long flap, a metal plate closure, padded straps. Adults outside Japan wear it small and high as a design object.

How does a knot bag close?

The two handles are different lengths. Pull the long one through the short one and the weight of the bag holds it shut; lift it out to open. No clasp, no zip.

What are the bags made of?

The randoseru is a moulded synthetic; the knot bag and the clasp purse are printed cloth, the purse on a metal kiss-lock frame; the star backpack is a smooth synthetic. The fabric line on each page says which.

Are they made in Japan?

No. They are a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.

How big are they?

The randoseru takes a large notebook; the knot bag takes a phone, a purse and a fan; the clasp purse fits in a palm; the star backpack is 38 by 37 by 14 cm. All are small by Western standards.

How do I clean them?

Wipe the synthetic bags with a damp cloth. Hand wash the knot bag cool and dry flat. Spot clean the clasp purse only; the plush cat and the frame do not go in water.
