Stretched on a wooden frame, three sizes.

About this piece

Hokusai print of a sunset under Ryogoku Bridge, ferry passengers and Fuji beyond

A ferry full of people, a bridge, and the mountain at sunset. This is Hokusai's view from the bank of the Sumida river in Edo: a ferry crosses in the foreground with its passengers packed in and the boatman at his pole, the long wooden arc of Ryogoku Bridge spans the picture behind them, and Fuji sits small on the horizon under a sky that goes from rose to blue. The river is the widest thing in it.

It is the print for a person who likes a crowd, and the ferry is one.

The name, Sekiyo, is the evening sun, the light of the print, and the picture is named for its hour.

The print is reproduced from the woodblock print on a textured canvas, stretched round a wooden frame with the image wrapping the edges, so it hangs without a frame and without glass. The colours are the print's own: the deep Prussian blue, the cream of the paper, the greens and the rose of the sky. The cartouche with the series title and the artist's signature is printed in the corner, as on the Edo sheet.

Hang it on a single nail at eye level, alone or in a row of three with two others from the series, which is how they look best. It goes above a desk, a sofa or a bed.

The passengers are the detail: a dozen people in the ferry, drawn with their backs and hats towards us, one with a basket, one with a child, and the boatman standing at the stern. The bridge behind is drawn as a long low curve on many posts, and the water is banded in blue.

Every print in the collection is photographed on the same wall at the same scale, so the pages compare.

Dust with a soft dry cloth or a brush; do not wet it. Keep it out of direct sun, which fades the blue over years, and away from a radiator, which loosens the canvas.

From across a room it is a river picture with a bridge. From close the ferry shows its passengers, the bridge its posts, and the mountain its size. It is the print for a person who has crossed a river at sunset.

Three sizes: 40 by 60 cm, 50 by 75 cm and 60 by 90 cm. The smallest suits a shelf or a small wall, the middle a desk, the largest a wall on its own. The image is the same in all three.

Questions about the japanese wall art

Are these original prints?

No. They are reproductions of Hokusai's Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, woodblock prints from the 1830s that are long out of copyright, printed on canvas or cloth from the images. Every page says so.

Canvas or poster?

The single views are printed on a textured canvas stretched round a wooden frame, with the image wrapping the edges, so they hang without a frame or glass. The three triptychs are cloth panels held in wooden hanging rails with a cord.

What sizes are there?

Singles: 40 by 60, 50 by 75 or 60 by 90 cm. Triptychs: three panels each of 30 by 60, 40 by 85 or 50 by 102 cm. Every print is photographed at the same scale, so the pages compare.

Are they made in Japan?

No. They are a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.

How do I hang them?

A single canvas hangs on one nail or picture hook. A triptych hangs on three nails at the same height, a finger's width apart; the gaps become part of the picture.

How do I look after them?

Dust with a soft dry cloth; do not wet. Keep out of direct sun, which fades the blue over years, and away from radiators. Roll a triptych panel if it comes down; never fold it.

What we sell, and what we don't

Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We say so on every page, because the alternative is selling you a word instead of a garment.
