About this piece
Peonies and camellias heaped at the shoulders, falling one at a time to the hem
The flowers on this haori are arranged the way flowers actually behave. Across the shoulders and the upper back they are heaped together, peonies in cream and pink, camellias in coral and red, dahlias, small white sprays, green leaves, a garland so full it hides the black. Then they thin. Down the body, single blooms hang from the garland, then loose flowers, then single petals, until at the hem there are only a few floating on plain black. Both fronts do the same, full at the shoulder and empty at the hem.
It is a floral for people who do not wear florals. The composition is the reason: it puts the colour where a collar would be and leaves the rest calm, so the jacket reads as black with a garland rather than as a print. From behind, it looks like something has been draped over the shoulders.
The name, Chirihana, means scattered blossom, the flowers that fall, and the print is the moment of falling, drawn from the top of the jacket to the bottom.
It is printed, not embroidered, with the flowers shaded petal by petal so they read as painted rather than flat, and the black around them kept matte. The cloth is polyester with a smooth surface and a dry hand, chosen because black must stay black around colour this soft, and because a haori this light should hang rather than stand. Three-quarter sleeves, open front with a flat band, no fastening, hem at the hip.
At three metres it is a black jacket with colour across the shoulders. At thirty centimetres every flower is a different flower, the leaves have veins, and the petals at the hem are drawn as if they have just landed. It is one of the best-drawn prints in the range and the quietest of the bold ones.
The cut is a short open haori, square at the shoulder and relaxed through the body. Over a white tee, the white column runs up under the garland and the front looks dressed. Over black, the garland floats on one dark shape and the jacket becomes an evening piece. It goes with black trousers, cream trousers, dark denim, and plain shoes.
Sizes run from M to 5XL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.
Questions about the haori
Is a haori the same as a kimono jacket?
Close cousins. A haori is the short coat worn open over a kimono in Japan. Ours keep that shape, a flat front band, wide three-quarter sleeves and a hem at the hip, and are cut to sit over a T-shirt. A kimono jacket is the same idea with a plainer edge and, often, a tie or toggle.
Does it run small?
Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Between two sizes, take the larger. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.
Is it silk?
No. Every haori in this collection is polyester, as stated on its page and on the inner label. We never sell silk as something else, or something else as silk.
Is it made in Japan?
No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
How do I wear it?
Open, over a plain T-shirt, with denim or dark trousers, and nothing else patterned: the print is the point. Three-quarter sleeves make it a spring-to-autumn layer, and a knit underneath carries it into the first cold weeks.
How do I wash it?
