About this piece

Wooden hair stick with a carved flower, gold leaves and a tassel of beads

A dark stick with a flower at the top and beads that swing. This kanzashi is a single hair stick in a dark polished wood, tapering to a point, with a small flower at the head in a coloured stone-look resin, a spray of gold metal leaves behind it, and a short tassel of beads on a cord that hangs from the flower and moves when the head does. It comes in five versions: a purple flower with purple beads, a pale green flower with green and gold, a white flower with amber, a jade disc with pale green drops, and a white and yellow flower with amber.

It is the simplest of the hair ornaments in the collection to wear and the one with the most movement, and the tassel is what people notice.

The name, kanzashi, is the Japanese word for a hair ornament, any of them, and the stick is the oldest kind: a single pin that holds a knot of hair by passing through it.

The stick is a dark hardwood, turned and polished, about the length of a hand, with the flower and leaves set into the head and the tassel on a cord through it. The flower is a stone-look resin carved with petals, and the beads are glass and resin in the matching colour.

Wear it through a bun or a twist: gather the hair, twist it up, and push the stick through from one side, catching hair on the way, and it holds. It takes a few tries the first time and then it is faster than a clip. With a kimono or a yukata it is the correct thing; with a plain dress it is the interesting thing.

The five versions are five stones: purple, pale green, white, jade and amber, each with its own beads, and the gold leaves are the same on all. The photographs show all five.

The tassel is the detail: three or four beads on a cord that hang below the flower and swing, so the ornament is never quite still, and the gold leaves behind the flower catch the light when it moves.

From across a room it is a dark stick in a bun with a flash of colour. From close the flower shows its carving, the leaves their gold, and the beads their swing. It is the hair stick for a person who wears their hair up.

Wipe with a dry cloth; keep the resin flower out of perfume and hairspray, which dull it. Store it flat so the tassel does not tangle.

One size. The stick is about the length of a hand and holds hair of shoulder length or longer.

Questions about the japanese hair accessories

What is a kanzashi?

Any Japanese hair ornament. The oldest kind is a single stick pushed through a bun; the most elaborate is the folded-petal clip a maiko wears, with strands that fall to the shoulder. Both are here.

How do I wear a hair stick?

Gather the hair, twist it up into a bun, push the stick through from one side catching hair on the way, and it holds. Two sticks hold more than one. Shoulder-length hair or longer.

What are they made of?

The hair stick is dark wood with a resin flower and metal leaves; the pair of sticks is a tortoiseshell-effect resin; the folded-petal clip is cloth on a metal clip; the headband is a smooth polyester cloth.

Are they made in Japan?

No. They are a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.

What do the characters on the headband mean?

The black one says certain victory, the phrase tied on before an exam or a match. The white one says ninja.

How do I care for them?

Wipe the sticks with a dry cloth and keep resin out of heat and hairspray. Keep the folded-petal clip dry and flat in its box; the petals crush. Hand wash the headband cool.
