About this piece
Flecked grey herringbone trousers tapered to a ribbed ankle, with a tasselled cord
The cloth on these trousers is a herringbone, flecked grey and charcoal, woven so the chevrons show from close and the surface reads as a warm heather from across a room. They are cut relaxed through the thigh and tapered to a ribbed ankle, with a soft waist and a drawstring finished in two cords with green-and-white tassels, which is the one detail on them.
It is the pair in the collection that looks most like it came from a tailor and behaves most like it came from a gym, and the herringbone is the reason.
The name, Sunago, is sand grain, the fleck in the weave, and the trousers are covered in it.
The cut is a relaxed taper with a ribbed cuff, sitting at the waist on a drawstring, with room through the thigh and a narrow ankle. The cloth is a heathered polyester-cotton blend woven in herringbone, with a soft brushed hand, chosen because a woven pattern gives a plain trouser depth and because a brushed cloth is the one for October. The tassels are cotton cord.
Wear them with a plain tee and trainers, as in the photograph, or with a knit and boots in the cold. They go with white, black, grey and any jacket in the range, and they do not need a belt unless you want one.
They wash cold, inside out, and dry on a line; the cloth does not crease into a map and does not need an iron, which is the point of a trouser cut for a street rather than an office.
From across a street they are grey trousers with a tassel. From close the herringbone shows its chevrons and the fleck its two greys, and the cuff its rib. They are the pair for the person who wants a jogger that could go to lunch.
The waist is a flat elastic under the drawstring, so the tassels are decoration and the trousers stay up on their own. The rib at the ankle is a knit, sewn to the woven cloth, and it is the same grey as the fleck.
It goes with a grey knit in October and a white tee in May, which is a wider season than most trousers manage, and the tassels can be tucked in if the day is a serious one.
Sizes run from M to 5XL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.
Questions about the japanese pants
What kind of trousers are these?
Japanese street trousers: cargos, joggers, wide legs and the tobi and harem cuts of the building site and the temple town, several embroidered with cranes, dragons and clouds. Every page says the cut, and every pair was photographed with a white tee and white trainers, which is how they are worn.
Does it run small?
Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Take one size up from your usual; between two sizes, take the larger. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.
What is it made of?
Mostly light polyester-cotton blends, with denim for the two denim pairs, a linen-look cotton blend for the embroidered ones, corduroy blends for the patchwork and the workwear pair, and a heat-set pleated polyester for the pleated trousers. Each page says which.
Embroidered or printed?
Each page says. The cranes, the characters and the clouds are embroidered; the dragons and the camouflage are printed; the kimono and dragon panels are printed cloth sewn in.
Is it made in Japan?
No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
How do I wash it?
Machine wash cold, inside out, and hang to dry; denim with its own colour the first time. Nothing needs ironing, and the pleated pair must not be.
What we sell, and what we don't
