About this piece
Skate sneakers with crosses patched across the toe and side, in white, red or purple
Crosses, sewn on. Five or six of them, in the shape of a gothic cross, patched across the toe and the side of these skate shoes, tone on tone in the white version, in hot pink on brown in the second, and in purple in the third. The white pair is the quiet one, where the crosses show as texture; the brown pair is the loud one, with pink laces to match.
It is the sneaker in the collection with the most attitude and the least colour, and the crosses are stitched rather than printed, so they stand off the shoe.
The name, Jujika, is the cross, the shape of the patches, and the shoe has a handful.
The sole is a flat cupsole in rubber with a vulcanised look, the upper is a mix of brushed synthetic and smooth panels with a padded collar and tongue, and the shoe is cut low. It is the skate shoe, the shape of the eighties, and it is built to be worn every day rather than skated in.
Wear them with a white sock pulled up, as in the photograph, which is how every pair in this collection was shot and how they are worn in Tokyo: the sock is part of the shoe. White trousers, black jeans, the cropped pants from the range, and nothing else on the foot that argues.
The crosses are cut from a synthetic and stitched to the panels with a visible edge, and they are placed differently on the left and right shoe. The cupsole is white on all three, and the laces match the crosses.
The last is a Japanese one, wider at the toe box than a European sneaker and lower at the instep, which is part of why they run small: the length is short and the width is generous. A wide foot will be comfortable; a narrow one will want the thicker sock.
Wipe them with a damp cloth; do not machine wash. A soft brush for the mesh, a cloth for the panels, and they are ready for the next day.
From across a street they are white, brown or purple skate shoes with shapes on them. From close the shapes are crosses with stitched edges, and the collar shows its padding. They are the sneaker for a black trouser and a silver chain.
Sizes run from EU 36 to 44. They are cut to Asian sizing and run small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.
Questions about the japanese sneakers
What is a Japanese sneaker?
A sneaker designed in the Tokyo streetwear tradition: chunky soles, layered panels, knit collars, colour used with intent and a white sock worn pulled up.
Do they run small?
Yes. They are cut on an Asian last, shorter in length and wider at the toe than a European sneaker. Take one size up from your usual; between two sizes, take the larger.
What are they made of?
Synthetic, mesh, knit or brushed uppers on moulded rubber or EVA soles, depending on the pair. The fabric line on each product page says which.
Are they made in Japan?
No. They are a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
How do I wear them?
With a white sock pulled up, as photographed, and a trouser that shows the shoe: cropped, tapered or a jogger with a ribbed cuff.
How do I clean them?
Wipe with a damp cloth and a soft brush for the mesh. Do not machine wash, and keep them out of direct heat.
What we sell, and what we don't
Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We say so on every page, because the alternative is selling you a word instead of a garment.
