About this piece

Yellow star backpack with two black eyes, the bag that grins at people behind you

A yellow star with eyes. This small backpack is cut as a five-pointed star in a smooth, glossy yellow synthetic, with two tall oval eyes in black on the front, a zip running round the edge of the star that opens the whole face, and two adjustable straps at the back. It is a bag and a character at once, and it is worn by people who want the people behind them to smile.

It is the least serious bag in the shop and the one most often photographed on the wearer, and the eyes are what people photograph.

The name is the plain one: it is a kawaii backpack, a cute one, and cute is the whole design. We do not name the game it winks at, and neither does the bag; there is no text or logo on it.

The body is a smooth synthetic with a slight gloss, padded a little so the points hold their shape, with the eyes applied in a black synthetic and the zip in yellow. Inside there is one compartment the size of a tablet, unlined, and the straps are the same yellow with plastic buckles.

Wear it on both shoulders, high, so the star sits between the shoulder blades and the eyes look back. It carries a tablet, a jumper and a phone, and it is the bag for a convention, a festival, a theme park, or a person who likes being looked at from behind. With a black outfit it is the only colour; with the streetwear in the range it is a punctuation mark.

The zip is the detail: it runs round the whole outline of the star, so the bag opens flat like a book, and it follows the points, which is more sewing than it looks. The eyes are two tall ovals, set close, and they are what turns a star into a face.

From across a street it is a yellow star on a back. From close the eyes show their ovals, the zip its route round the points, and the surface its gloss. It is the bag for a person who is not afraid of being cheerful.

Wipe it with a damp cloth; the surface does not stain. Store it flat or stuffed so the points keep their shape.

One size: 38 cm across, 37 cm high and 14 cm deep, which is a small backpack, the size of a tablet and a jumper. The straps adjust from a child's back to an adult's.

Questions about the japanese bags

What is a randoseru?

The boxy, stiff-sided backpack every Japanese child carries through primary school: a long flap, a metal plate closure, padded straps. Adults outside Japan wear it small and high as a design object.

How does a knot bag close?

The two handles are different lengths. Pull the long one through the short one and the weight of the bag holds it shut; lift it out to open. No clasp, no zip.

What are the bags made of?

The randoseru is a moulded synthetic; the knot bag and the clasp purse are printed cloth, the purse on a metal kiss-lock frame; the star backpack is a smooth synthetic. The fabric line on each page says which.

Are they made in Japan?

No. They are a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.

How big are they?

The randoseru takes a large notebook; the knot bag takes a phone, a purse and a fan; the clasp purse fits in a palm; the star backpack is 38 by 37 by 14 cm. All are small by Western standards.

How do I clean them?

Wipe the synthetic bags with a damp cloth. Hand wash the knot bag cool and dry flat. Spot clean the clasp purse only; the plush cat and the frame do not go in water.

What we sell, and what we don't
