About this piece

Grey palm fronds sweeping across speckled charcoal, tied with a dark brown obi

Palms are not a Japanese motif, and on this yukata they become one. Long fronds in two greys sweep across a charcoal ground flecked with tiny pale dots, drawn as feathered leaves and fan shapes at a scale where one frond crosses the chest and another the sleeve, so the print reads as foliage seen at night rather than a tropical pattern. The obi is dark brown, wide and flat, with a small check in the weave.

It is the leaf print in the men's range with the most movement, because the fronds are drawn bending in one direction as if in wind, and because the speckled ground gives the dark surface a grain that keeps it from reading flat. From across a room it is a charcoal robe with pale sweeps on it. Up close it is a garden after dark.

The name, Shuro, is the windmill palm, the hardy palm that grows in temple gardens as far north as Tokyo and whose fibre was used for brushes and rope. It is the one palm that is Japanese, and it is the one on the cloth.

It is printed, not woven, with the greys kept soft at the edges of each leaf so the fronds look brushed. The cloth is polyester with a dry hand and a slight texture, chosen because a charcoal this dark must stay even under pale grey through washing, and because a yukata for the warm months should hang light.

The obi is included. Cross the fronts left over right, wrap the brown obi twice at the waist and knot it at the hip. Brown on charcoal is a warm, quiet pairing, and it keeps the outfit from going cold.

At three metres it is a dark robe with pale sweeps on it. At thirty centimetres the fronds separate into their leaflets, the speckle in the ground appears, and the two greys show their difference. It is built for the second look.

The cut is long, falling to the ankle, with wide square sleeves and the room to walk. Worn at home it is a robe with a garden in the dark. Worn out with dark sandals it is a summer outfit that reads modern from the street and botanical from the table, and it goes with black, grey and brown.

Sizes run from M to XL, by height. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about the kimono

Is it a kimono or a yukata?

Both are the same shape: a long robe crossed left over right and tied with an obi. A yukata is the unlined summer version in a light woven cloth; the satin pieces here are printed kimono robes. Every page says which it is, and the obi is included with each.

Does it run small?

Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Men's yukata are sized by height; between two sizes, take the larger. Women's kimono are one size, with a wrap front that adjusts at the obi. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.

Is it silk?

No. Every piece in this collection is polyester, woven for the yukata and satin for the printed kimono, as stated on its page and on the inner label. We never sell silk as something else, or something else as silk.

Is it made in Japan?

No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.

How do I wear it?

Cross the left front over the right, wrap the obi twice at the waist and knot it at the back or the hip. At home it is a robe; out, with sandals, it is the whole outfit. A plain T-shirt underneath if the evening cools.

How do I wash it?

Machine wash cold, inside out, with similar colours, on a gentle cycle for the satin pieces. Hang to dry. Iron on low, inside out over any print.
