The short answer

About this piece
Hokusai print of a gust of wind at Ejiri, papers flying and Fuji still
The wind is the subject, and the mountain does not move. This is Hokusai's view at Ejiri in Suruga: a gust bends two thin trees to the right, tears the papers from a traveller's bundle and a hat from a head, and sends them tumbling into a pale sky, while other travellers bend on the road through the marsh grass and Fuji stands in outline, pale and still, beyond. The sky is almost empty and the papers fill it.
It is the print for a person who wants the series' lightest picture, and the wind is what makes it.
The name, Sunshu, is the old short name for Suruga, the province of the print's title, and the picture is a road through it on a windy day.
The print is reproduced from the woodblock print on a textured canvas, stretched round a wooden frame with the image wrapping the edges, so it hangs without a frame and without glass. The colours are the print's own: the deep Prussian blue, the cream of the paper, the greens and the rose of the sky. The cartouche with the series title and the artist's signature is printed in the corner, as on the Edo sheet.
Hang it on a single nail at eye level, alone or in a row of three with two others from the series, which is how they look best. It goes above a desk, a sofa or a bed.
The papers are the detail: a dozen sheets and one hat, drawn as small shapes turning in the air, scattered up and to the right across an empty sky, and they are the whole movement of the picture. Fuji beneath them is drawn as a single outline with no colour inside.
Every print in the collection is photographed on the same wall at the same scale, so the pages compare.
Dust with a soft dry cloth or a brush; do not wet it. Keep it out of direct sun, which fades the blue over years, and away from a radiator, which loosens the canvas.
From across a room it is a pale picture with things in the air. From close the papers show their turn, the trees their bend, and the mountain its bare line. It is the print for a person who likes the wind, and for a wall that gets it.
Three sizes: 40 by 60 cm, 50 by 75 cm and 60 by 90 cm. The smallest suits a shelf or a small wall, the middle a desk, the largest a wall on its own. The image is the same in all three.
Questions about the japanese wall art
Are these original prints?
No. They are reproductions of Hokusai's Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, woodblock prints from the 1830s that are long out of copyright, printed on canvas or cloth from the images. Every page says so.
Canvas or poster?
The single views are printed on a textured canvas stretched round a wooden frame, with the image wrapping the edges, so they hang without a frame or glass. The three triptychs are cloth panels held in wooden hanging rails with a cord.
What sizes are there?
Singles: 40 by 60, 50 by 75 or 60 by 90 cm. Triptychs: three panels each of 30 by 60, 40 by 85 or 50 by 102 cm. Every print is photographed at the same scale, so the pages compare.
Are they made in Japan?
No. They are a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
How do I hang them?
A single canvas hangs on one nail or picture hook. A triptych hangs on three nails at the same height, a finger's width apart; the gaps become part of the picture.
How do I look after them?
Dust with a soft dry cloth; do not wet. Keep out of direct sun, which fades the blue over years, and away from radiators. Roll a triptych panel if it comes down; never fold it.
What we sell, and what we don't
