About this piece
Black cargo joggers with four boxed pockets and buckled straps behind
Four pockets in front and straps behind. These black cargo joggers carry two boxed flap pockets on each thigh, stacked, and on the back of each leg a pair of buckled straps that cinch or hang, in a light black weave with a soft drawstring waist and a ribbed cuff at the ankle. From the front they are a cargo; from the back they are a harness.
It is the utility pair of the collection, the one with the most hardware, and black is what keeps the hardware from shouting.
The name, Tetsu, is iron, the buckles, and the trousers are named for the thing that clicks.
The cut is a jogger: a soft waistband with a drawstring, room through the thigh, a taper to the knee and a ribbed cuff at the ankle that sits on the trainer. It is the shape Tokyo wears to the convenience store and to the club, and it does both. The cloth is a light woven polyester-cotton blend with a dry, matte hand, chosen because a street trouser must take a crease without keeping it, wash without shrinking and weigh nothing on a hot day, and a blend does all three. The buckles are plastic, black, and the straps are webbing.
Wear them with a white tee and white trainers, as in the photograph, which is the outfit every pair in this collection was photographed in and the one they are all best in. A black tee in the evening, a haori or a sukajan over the top when it turns, and nothing else with a pattern below the waist.
They wash cold, inside out, and dry on a line; the cloth does not crease into a map and does not need an iron, which is the point of a trouser cut for a street rather than an office.
From across a street they are black joggers with pockets. From close the pockets show their boxes, the straps their buckles, and the cuff its rib. They are the pair for the person who wants the techwear idea without the reflective trim.
The pockets are the working part: slash pockets at the hip deep enough for a phone, and a back pocket, so the trousers carry a day without a bag. The waist sits where you tie it and does not dig, and the seat has room to sit on a step.
Sizes run from M to 3XL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.
Questions about the japanese pants
What kind of trousers are these?
Japanese street trousers: cargos, joggers, wide legs and the tobi and harem cuts of the building site and the temple town, several embroidered with cranes, dragons and clouds. Every page says the cut, and every pair was photographed with a white tee and white trainers, which is how they are worn.
Does it run small?
Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Take one size up from your usual; between two sizes, take the larger. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.
What is it made of?
Mostly light polyester-cotton blends, with denim for the two denim pairs, a linen-look cotton blend for the embroidered ones, corduroy blends for the patchwork and the workwear pair, and a heat-set pleated polyester for the pleated trousers. Each page says which.
Embroidered or printed?
Each page says. The cranes, the characters and the clouds are embroidered; the dragons and the camouflage are printed; the kimono and dragon panels are printed cloth sewn in.
Is it made in Japan?
No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
How do I wash it?
Machine wash cold, inside out, and hang to dry; denim with its own colour the first time. Nothing needs ironing, and the pleated pair must not be.
What we sell, and what we don't
Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We say so on every page, because the alternative is selling you a word instead of a garment.
