About this piece
A blue dragon coiling through storm clouds, gold-bellied, from the hem to the collar
There is no plain cloth on this happi coat. A dragon fills it: blue-grey scales, tan plates along the belly, a silver mane and whiskers, red tongue out, coiling up the back from waves at the hem to its head at the shoulder, and continuing over both fronts and both sleeves in loops of body and cloud, so that the animal seems to have wrapped itself round the wearer. Steel-blue clouds curl on black everywhere the dragon is not. Only the collar band is plain.
It is the most complete of the dragon coats and the darkest in tone, blue, black, tan and silver with one red tongue, and that palette is what keeps it wearable. From a distance it reads as a textured dark coat. Up close it has teeth.
The name, Raiun, is the thundercloud, the storm the dragon is supposed to bring, and the clouds on the coat are those clouds.
It is printed, not embroidered, with the scales drawn one by one and the clouds outlined in black so they hold their shape. The cloth is polyester, firmly woven with a dry, matte hand and a clean drape, chosen because a happi is a coat for standing in a crowd in July and must stay light, hold a flat collar band and keep its print through a summer of washing. It is unlined.
The cut is the classic happi: straight through the body, falling to mid-thigh, with wide three-quarter sleeves, a flat collar band and no fastening. It hangs open over a tee and stays open, with a slit at each side seam.
From across a street it is a dark coat with blue movement all over it and something pale at the shoulder. From close the dragon has claws, whiskers and an expression, and the clouds have a hundred spirals.
Wear it over a white tee and white trousers, as in the photograph, or over black to let the dragon do all the work. Nothing else with a pattern anywhere near it.
A happi is longer and straighter than a haori, with a flat collar band that does not fold back, and on a print this full the band is the one place the eye can rest. It is left plain for that reason. The rest is dragon, and the dragon is enough for anyone.
Sizes run from S to 5XL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.
Questions about the happi coat
What is a happi coat?
The straight, open coat of the Japanese festival: a flat collar band that never folds back, wide sleeves cut in one with the body, a hem at mid-thigh and no fastening. It is worn open over a T-shirt by the people carrying the shrine, and by everyone else watching.
Is it the same as a haori?
No. A haori is shorter, with a collar band folded back on itself, and was worn over a kimono. A happi is longer and straighter, with a flat band, and was made to be worn in a crowd. Ours keep that cut.
Does it run small?
Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Take one size up from your usual; between two sizes, take the larger. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.
Is it silk or cotton?
Neither. Every happi in this collection is polyester, firmly woven and unlined, as stated on its page and on the inner label. We never sell silk as something else, or something else as silk.
Is it made in Japan?
No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
How do I wash it?
Machine wash cold, inside out, with similar colours. Hang to dry. Iron on low, inside out over the print.
