About this piece
Plush hamster seat cushion with a back, for a child, in four colours
A hamster you sit in. This cushion is shaped as a hamster sitting up, with the padded body as a seat, the back rising behind it with the head at the top, the two front paws at the sides as armrests and the hind paws in front, in a soft short-pile plush, in four colours: a grey hamster, an orange one, a chocolate one and a pink one, each with a white front and pink ears and paws. It is a seat for a child and a lap for a soft toy.
It is the one piece of furniture in the collection, if a hamster counts, and it does.
The name, Hamusuke, is the hamster with a boy's name ending, the way a child names a pet, and the cushion is that pet.
The cushion is a plush shell sewn in the shape of a sitting hamster, stuffed firm in the seat and the back and softer in the head and paws, with embroidered eyes and nose and a white plush front. The seat is padded to take a child's weight.
Put it on the floor of a child's room, in front of the television or the bookshelf, and it is the chair they choose. It also holds a soft toy, a tablet, or a grown-up's feet.
The armrests are the detail: the hamster's front paws come round at the sides of the seat as two padded rests, and its cheeks are stuffed full the way a hamster's are, so the face reads from across a room. The white front is a separate plush.
Japan sits on the floor, and the cushion is the chair. On tatami or on boards it goes under a low table, in front of a window, beside a bed; in a Western room it goes on a sofa, a chair or a floor by the fire, and it is the thing a guest is handed. Every cushion in the collection is photographed on the same pale ground at the same scale, so the pages compare.
Spot clean, or hand wash cool and dry flat if it must; it is large and it takes a day to dry. Brush the pile when dry.
From across a room it is a hamster the size of a child. From close the cheeks show their stuffing, the paws their pink, and the seat its padding. It is the cushion for a child's room and a person who was one.
One size, a seat for a small child; the back rises to about a child's shoulder. The four colours are the same size and fill.
Questions about the japanese cushions
What is a zabuton?
The flat floor cushion of a Japanese room: the seat at a low table, in front of a window, beside a bed. The round ones here are zabuton; the straw ones are the tea-room and temple versions; the plush ones are the same idea with a face.
What are they made of?
The straw cushions are coiled rush or straw, bound with cord. The cloth cushions have a cotton-mix cover, printed or napped, over a firm synthetic wadding. The plush ones are a short-pile plush over a soft fill. The fabric line on each page says which.
How big are they?
The rush cushion is 30 cm; the printed zabuton comes in 43, 49 or 59 cm; the others are the round of a seat, and the hamster is a child's chair. Every cushion is photographed at the same scale, so the pages compare.
Are they made in Japan?
No. They are a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
Can I use them on a chair?
Yes. The square wave cushion is made for one; the round ones sit on a chair, a bench or a window seat as well as the floor. The straw ones are for the floor, a stool or a teapot.
How do I wash them?
Cloth and plush cushions: machine wash cool on a gentle cycle, dry flat, reshape when damp. Straw: keep dry, brush, air in the sun. The hamster is spot clean.
What we sell, and what we don't
Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We say so on every page, because the alternative is selling you a word instead of a garment.
