About this piece
A red demon face drawn large across the back, lilies and a rope round it
The demon on this happi coat is drawn so large that the back cannot hold it: the face runs from the collar band to the hem, red skin, gold fangs, yellow eyes, black horns, with pink lilies opening round it and a green twisted rope hung above like the rope at a shrine gate. On the front, the same face is printed across the two fronts, so it splits down the middle when the coat hangs open and reassembles when it closes. Only the sleeves are quieter, and not by much.
It is the coat for someone who wants a demon and wants everyone to know, and the rope above the face is the joke: the twisted straw rope that marks a shrine boundary and keeps demons out.
The name, Shimenawa, is that rope, the one across the top of the print, and the demon is on the wrong side of it.
It is printed, not embroidered, in flat colour with black outlines, drawn in the pop style of a festival poster. The cloth is polyester, firmly woven with a dry, matte hand and a clean drape, chosen because a happi is a coat for standing in a crowd in July and must stay light, hold a flat collar band and keep its print through a summer of washing. It is unlined.
The cut is the classic happi: straight through the body, falling to mid-thigh, with wide three-quarter sleeves, a flat collar band and no fastening. It hangs open over a white tee and stays open, with a slit at each side.
From across a street the back is a red face on black with pink at the edges. From close the fangs have their gold, the eyes have their pupils, and the rope has its twist. The split face on the front is the part people photograph.
Wear it over a white tee and white trousers, as in the photograph, or over black. It is the coat for the night of the festival rather than the afternoon, and it knows it.
The collar band is flat and black and runs straight down through the middle of the demon's face on the front, which is the point: the band is what splits him. The coat is longer and straighter than a haori, and the face uses every inch of it.
Sizes run from S to 5XL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.
Questions about the happi coat
What is a happi coat?
The straight, open coat of the Japanese festival: a flat collar band that never folds back, wide sleeves cut in one with the body, a hem at mid-thigh and no fastening. It is worn open over a T-shirt by the people carrying the shrine, and by everyone else watching.
Is it the same as a haori?
No. A haori is shorter, with a collar band folded back on itself, and was worn over a kimono. A happi is longer and straighter, with a flat band, and was made to be worn in a crowd. Ours keep that cut.
Does it run small?
Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Take one size up from your usual; between two sizes, take the larger. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.
Is it silk or cotton?
Neither. Every happi in this collection is polyester, firmly woven and unlined, as stated on its page and on the inner label. We never sell silk as something else, or something else as silk.
Is it made in Japan?
No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
How do I wash it?
