About this piece

Plain knit high socks in black or white, three heights, to set the gap

Half the language of a Japanese school outfit is the gap between the hem of the skirt and the top of the sock, and these socks are how you set it. They are plain, solid-colour knit socks in black or white, with no pattern, a ribbed cuff and a smooth leg, and they come in three heights: 30 cm to the middle of the calf, 40 cm to just below the knee, and 50 cm to over it. Six choices, two colours, three lengths, and the outfit changes with each.

Black reads sharp against a pale skirt and disappears against a dark one. White is the classic, the one the uniform was drawn with. The 30 is the sock of an ordinary day, the 40 the one most photographs show, and the 50 the one for a cold walk to school.

The name, Ashimoto, means at the feet, the Japanese phrase for where you are standing and for what you have on when you get there.

The knit is a stretch nylon, smooth and close, chosen because a sock this high must stay up without a band that digs, and because a plain colour must stay plain through many washes. It washes cold and dries on a line in an hour.

Wear the white with any of the sailor sets and black lace-up shoes, which is the uniform. Wear the black with the black sets for a column, or with the sky-blue one for contrast. The over-the-knee in black with a short black skirt is a look on its own, and it has been for forty years.

The cuff is ribbed and wide, so it grips without leaving a line, and the leg is knitted straight, so it lies flat on the calf. The toe and heel are reinforced.

From across a street they are a line of black or white between the hem and the shoe. From close the knit shows its rib at the cuff and its smoothness below. They are the cheapest thing in the collection and the one that changes the outfit most.

Six variants means the sock matches the set: white 40 with the sky blue, black 50 with the all-black, white 30 with the cream, and the rest is up to you. They are sold by height and colour, one pair each, and they should be bought in twos.

They come in one size, knitted to stretch, and they fit most adult legs at any of the three heights.

Questions about the japanese school uniform

Is this a real Japanese school uniform?

It is the pattern of one: the sailor top with the striped collar, the knife-pleated skirt, the gakuran with its stand collar and gold buttons. No school, no badge, no crest. The cut is the real cut, and it is sold to adults.

What comes in a set?

The top and the skirt, or the jacket and the trousers, and the bow or scarf where the page shows one. Socks, bag and shoes are sold separately on their own pages.

Does it run small?

Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Take one size up from your usual; between two sizes, take the larger. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.

What is it made of?

The uniforms are polyester blends, woven to hold a pleat and a collar. The socks are a nylon knit, the bag and the shoes a synthetic leather. Each page says which. Never silk, never wool.

Is it made in Japan?

No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.

How do I wash it?

Machine wash cold, inside out, and hang the skirt from the waistband so the pleats fall straight; they come back on the hanger. Bows and scarves come off first. Wipe the bag and shoes with a damp cloth.

What we sell, and what we don't

Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We say so on every page, because the alternative is selling you a word instead of a garment.
