About this piece
Silver signet ring with a seated bodhisattva on an oval face and gold seals
A seated figure in an oval, ringed in script. This signet ring carries a bodhisattva seated with several arms and a halo of rays on its oval face, in relief on a darkened ground, with a border of Sanskrit lettering round the oval and a small round gold seal carrying a seed syllable set into each shoulder. The band is polished and open at the back.
It is the silver counterpart of the steel signets in the collection, and the one with the most on its face: a figure, a border and two seals.
The name, Bosatsu, is the bodhisattva, the enlightened one who stays to help, and the ring carries one.
The ring is sterling silver, stamped 925 inside the band, cast in one piece, the face about 17 by 13 mm, the figure in relief and the ground darkened, the two shoulder seals gold-toned inlays. The band is open and adjusts.
Wear it on the ring or little finger of either hand, as a signet, and on its own. It goes with a shirt and with the black clothes in the range, and it is the signet for someone who wants silver rather than steel.
The border is the detail: the Sanskrit runs the full way round the oval in small letters, so the face reads as a seal rather than a picture, and the gold syllables at the shoulders repeat the idea in colour. The figure's arms fan out against the rays.
From across a table it is a silver signet with a dark oval and a gold dot. From close the oval shows the figure and its rays, the border its letters, and the seals their syllables. It is the ring for someone who wants a signet with a text.
Every ring in the collection is photographed on the same pale ground at the same scale, so the pages compare with each other: what looks big here is big on the hand. The measurements given are taken across the face, not round the finger.
Silver darkens with time and skin, and this ring is meant to: the recesses are already blackened so the relief reads, and the high points polish themselves against your hand. Wipe with a soft cloth; a silver cloth brings the shine back when you want it. Take it off for the sea and the shower.
The band is open at the back, so one size fits most hands: slide it on, then press the ends gently together or apart to set it. It is meant to be adjusted a few times, not every day; find the size and leave it.
Questions about the japanese rings
What is a Japanese ring?
A ring built on Japanese imagery: dragons, koi, guardian lions, temple deities, sutras and Sanskrit seed syllables, helmets and masks. Most are sculpted in the round rather than set with stones.
How do I find my size?
Sizes are the inside circumference in millimetres. Wrap a strip of paper round the finger, mark where it meets and measure it flat. For a wide band, take the larger of two sizes. Open bands are one size and adjust by hand.
Are they silver or steel?
Both, and each page says which. The silver rings are sterling silver stamped 925 inside the band; the steel rings are stainless steel, some with a black or gold-toned finish. Neither turns a finger green.
Are they made in Japan?
No. They are a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
Will the dark finish wear off?
The darkening in the recesses is deliberate and stays; the high points polish with wear, which is how the relief is meant to read. Gold-toned and black coatings soften over years of daily wear.
How do I care for them?
Wipe with a soft cloth. Silver darkens with time and a silver cloth brings it back; take silver off for the sea and the shower. Steel can be worn in water and dried after.
