About this piece

Pale denim jeans tie-dyed in white swirls, cut straight and relaxed, five pockets

The swirls on these jeans were made by tying the denim before it was bleached, so the white runs in wide diagonal bands through the pale blue with soft edges and a few splatters, front and back, no two pairs alike. The cut is the classic: five pockets, a button fly, a relaxed straight leg from the hip to a plain hem that sits on the trainer.

It is the one pair of jeans in the collection with a pattern, and the pattern is in the cloth rather than on it, which is why it looks like weather rather than a print.

The name, Kumoshibori, is cloud tie-dye, the pattern the bands make, and the jeans are wearing the sky.

The cut is a relaxed straight jean with room through the thigh and a leg that falls without a taper; it sits at the waist and stacks a little on the shoe. The cloth is denim, washed so the colour has already moved at the seams, chosen because denim gets better with the years and a jogger cut in it is the most comfortable thing denim has ever been asked to do. The tie-dye is in the wash, so it will not move further than it has.

Wear them with a white tee and white trainers, as in the photograph, which is the outfit every pair in this collection was photographed in and the one they are all best in. A black tee in the evening, a haori or a sukajan over the top when it turns, and nothing else with a pattern below the waist.

They wash cold, inside out, with their own colour the first time, and hang; the pale blue softens and the white stays white.

From across a street they are pale jeans with white bands. From close the bands show their soft edges and the splatters their drops, and the denim shows its weave through the white. They are the jeans for someone who wants denim and has enough plain pairs.

The button fly is the old kind, four buttons, and the back pockets sit high, so the jeans read as a classic cut from behind whatever the front is doing. They are cut to sit at the waist rather than the hip, which is where a relaxed jean belongs.

Sizes run from S to XXL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about the japanese pants

What kind of trousers are these?

Japanese street trousers: cargos, joggers, wide legs and the tobi and harem cuts of the building site and the temple town, several embroidered with cranes, dragons and clouds. Every page says the cut, and every pair was photographed with a white tee and white trainers, which is how they are worn.

Does it run small?

Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Take one size up from your usual; between two sizes, take the larger. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.

What is it made of?

Mostly light polyester-cotton blends, with denim for the two denim pairs, a linen-look cotton blend for the embroidered ones, corduroy blends for the patchwork and the workwear pair, and a heat-set pleated polyester for the pleated trousers. Each page says which.

Embroidered or printed?

Each page says. The cranes, the characters and the clouds are embroidered; the dragons and the camouflage are printed; the kimono and dragon panels are printed cloth sewn in.

Is it made in Japan?

No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.

How do I wash it?

Machine wash cold, inside out, and hang to dry; denim with its own colour the first time. Nothing needs ironing, and the pleated pair must not be.

What we sell, and what we don't

Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We say so on every page, because the alternative is selling you a word instead of a garment.
