About this piece

A gold dragon coiled through red and orange maple leaves, on black with red sleeves

Autumn is the season of this sukajan. The dragon on the back is gold, coiled in a full circle with its head at the centre, and round it maple leaves in red, orange and gold fall so thickly that the black between them almost disappears. The leaves continue onto both sleeves, and on the chest a smaller gold dragon sits on the left with a cascade of red leaves on the right. Red sleeves, black body, ribbing striped red and black.

It is the warmest of the dragon sukajan in its colours, and the one for October, because the maples on it are the maples of the Japanese autumn, embroidered leaf by leaf.

The name, Hanaryu, means flower dragon, the animal in the leaves, and the leaves are the flowers of the season the jacket is for.

Every motif is embroidered, not printed, in dense satin stitch that stands off the cloth and catches the light differently as you move; that is the whole point of a sukajan, and it is the reason the jacket weighs what it does. The body is a satin blend with a soft sheen and a light quilted lining, and the collar, cuffs and hem are a ribbed knit, which is the construction the sukajan has had since the first ones were sewn for American sailors in Yokosuka in the late forties. It zips at the front and has a slash pocket at each hip. It washes cold, inside out, on a gentle cycle, and dries flat.

Wear it over a white tee and white trousers, as in the photograph, or over black for the red and gold to stand alone. It goes with brown, with cream, and with the month the leaves come down.

From across a street it is a black-and-red bomber with a gold circle on the back. From close the dragon has every scale in gold thread and the leaves have every lobe, in three colours, and the sleeves show them continuing. It is the sukajan for a walk under trees.

The sleeves are set in raglan, and the leaves run onto them so the arms are red and gold from the shoulder, which with the red satin beneath reads as a tree in the last week of October. The dragon on the chest is small and gold and coiled the same way as the one on the back.

Sizes run from M to 3XL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about the sukajan jacket

What is a sukajan?

The Japanese souvenir jacket: a satin bomber with a ribbed collar, cuffs and hem, embroidered on the back and chest with dragons, tigers, koi, cranes and gods, first sewn in Yokosuka for American sailors after the war. Ours keep the cut and the embroidery; a few are the same idea on a flight jacket, a denim jacket or a velvet-look cloth, and their pages say so.

Is the embroidery real?

Yes. Every motif is embroidered, not printed, in dense satin stitch. That is why the jackets weigh what they do and why the back catches the light.

Is it reversible?

No. None of our sukajan is reversible. The lining is a lining.

Does it run small?

Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Take one size up from your usual; between two sizes, take the larger. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.

What is it made of?

A satin blend for the classic sukajan, a matte nylon blend for the flight-jacket versions, washed denim for the one denim jacket, and a velvet-look or leather-look synthetic where the page says so. Never silk.

Is it made in Japan?

No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.

How do I wash it?

Cold, inside out, on a gentle cycle, and dry flat; never tumble an embroidered jacket. The leather-look jacket is wiped, not washed.

What we sell, and what we don't

Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We say so on every page, because the alternative is selling you a word instead of a garment.
