About this piece

Cranes with coral wings over cream waves, printed edge to edge on midnight

Everything on this haori is in motion. Cranes cross the cloth in every direction, cream-bodied, with wings that shade from cream to coral red and gold lines drawn through every feather. Between them, waves rise and curl in cream and gold, drawn as fine parallel lines the way old textiles drew water, with foam breaking white at each crest. Small white stars sit in the gaps. The ground is a navy so deep it reads black in low light and blue in the sun, and the print goes edge to edge, fronts, back and both sleeves, with no band and no border.

It is the fullest print in the haori range and one of the most classical: cranes and waves are the oldest pairing on Japanese cloth, and this version draws them the traditional way, in line and flat colour, with nothing shaded. The coral in the wings is what lifts it. Without it the jacket would be blue and cream and very polite. With it, it has a pulse.

The name, Shiosai, is the sound of the sea, the roar of the tide heard from the shore at night, and it is the right word for a print with this much water in it.

It is printed, not embroidered, with the gold lines kept fine and the cream kept bright against the dark. The cloth is polyester with a smooth surface and a dry hand, chosen because a navy this deep must stay even after washing and because an all-over print looks best on cloth that moves. Three-quarter sleeves, open front with a flat band, no fastening, hem at the hip.

At three metres it is a dark jacket with pale movement all over it. At thirty centimetres every crane has a red crown, every wave has its foam, and the gold lines separate into single strokes. It is built to be read at both distances.

The cut is a short open haori, square at the shoulder and relaxed through the body. Over a white tee, the white column runs up between the cranes and the front stays clean. Over black, the jacket goes darker and the coral wings become the only warm colour in the outfit. It goes with black trousers, dark denim, white in summer, and plain shoes.

Sizes run from M to 5XL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about the haori

Is a haori the same as a kimono jacket?

Close cousins. A haori is the short coat worn open over a kimono in Japan. Ours keep that shape, a flat front band, wide three-quarter sleeves and a hem at the hip, and are cut to sit over a T-shirt. A kimono jacket is the same idea with a plainer edge and, often, a tie or toggle.

Does it run small?

Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Between two sizes, take the larger. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.

Is it silk?

No. Every haori in this collection is polyester, as stated on its page and on the inner label. We never sell silk as something else, or something else as silk.

Is it made in Japan?

No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.

How do I wear it?

Open, over a plain T-shirt, with denim or dark trousers, and nothing else patterned: the print is the point. Three-quarter sleeves make it a spring-to-autumn layer, and a knit underneath carries it into the first cold weeks.

How do I wash it?

Machine wash cold, inside out, with similar colours. Hang to dry. Iron on low, inside out over any print.

What we sell, and what we don't

Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We say so on every page, because the alternative is selling you a word instead of a garment.
