About this piece

Folded-petal hair clip with flowers, leaves and two falling strands of petals with bells

Flowers folded from cloth, and petals that hang. This hair clip is a tsumami kanzashi, the ornament of the maiko: three flowers with petals folded from small squares of printed cloth, pearl centres and green leaves, mounted on a fan-shaped base in the same print, with two long strands of folded petals hanging from it that end in small gold bells. It comes in red, pink, blue or purple, and the photographs show all four.

It is the most elaborate hair ornament in the collection, and the strands are what make it: they fall to the shoulder and they ring.

The name, tsumami, is the pinching, the fold that makes each petal from a square of cloth, and the kanzashi made this way have been worn in Kyoto for three hundred years.

The flowers are made from squares of cloth folded into petals and glued point to point, with a pearl bead at each centre, on a stiffened base covered in the same print, and the strands are the same petals in a column on a thread with a bell at the end. The whole is mounted on a flat metal clip that opens with a pinch.

Wear it at the side of the head above the ear, clipped into a bun, a twist or simply into loose hair, with the strands falling forward over the temple, which is how a maiko wears it. With a yukata or a kimono it is the ornament; with a plain dress it is the occasion. It is also worn on a bag or a lapel, though it was not made for that.

The four colours are four cloths: red with a small print, pink with cherry blossom, blue with a gold-flecked print, purple with a pale floral. The leaves are green on all of them and the bells are gold.

The strands are the detail: each one is eight or nine folded petals in a column, in the colour of the flowers, and the bell at the end rings when the head turns. They are meant to move.

From across a room it is a flower at the side of a head with something falling from it. From close the petals show their folds, the pearls their centres, and the bells their gold. It is the ornament for a festival, a wedding, or a photograph in a kimono.

Keep it dry and out of a bag with anything heavy; the petals are folded, not sewn, and they crush. Store it flat in its box.

One size. The base is about the size of a palm and the strands fall about a hand's length below it. The clip holds fine hair and thick.

Questions about the japanese hair accessories

What is a kanzashi?

Any Japanese hair ornament. The oldest kind is a single stick pushed through a bun; the most elaborate is the folded-petal clip a maiko wears, with strands that fall to the shoulder. Both are here.

How do I wear a hair stick?

Gather the hair, twist it up into a bun, push the stick through from one side catching hair on the way, and it holds. Two sticks hold more than one. Shoulder-length hair or longer.

What are they made of?

The hair stick is dark wood with a resin flower and metal leaves; the pair of sticks is a tortoiseshell-effect resin; the folded-petal clip is cloth on a metal clip; the headband is a smooth polyester cloth.

Are they made in Japan?

No. They are a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.

What do the characters on the headband mean?

The black one says certain victory, the phrase tied on before an exam or a match. The white one says ninja.

How do I care for them?

Wipe the sticks with a dry cloth and keep resin out of heat and hairspray. Keep the folded-petal clip dry and flat in its box; the petals crush. Hand wash the headband cool.

What we sell, and what we don't
