About this piece

Wide corduroy workwear pants with two embroidered bands hanging from the waist, in three colours

Two bands hang from the waist of these pants to the knee, one on each side, embroidered with a column of characters, a crane and a gold cloud on a pink or black ground, and the pants beneath them are wide pleated corduroy, gathered to a tapered cuff, in army green, black or grey. They are the tobi trouser of the Japanese building site with the bands of a festival coat, and the corduroy makes them winter.

It is the widest pair in the collection and the one with the most going on at the waist, and the bands are the reason to buy it: they swing.

The name, Daiku, is the carpenter, the person the cut was made for, and the pants are named for the trade.

The cut is a wide pleated workwear pant with deep pleats at the front, room through the thigh and a cuff that tapers to the ankle, sitting at the waist with the bands hanging from it. The cloth is a corduroy blend with a soft rib and some weight, chosen because a wide trouser in winter needs body and because cord holds a pleat. The bands are embroidered cloth, sewn to the waist; the characters on them are a Chinese phrase about spending a fortune on one good drink, which is honest.

Wear them with a plain tee and trainers, as in the photograph, or with a knit and boots in the cold. They go with white, black, grey and any jacket in the range, and they do not need a belt unless you want one.

They wash cold, inside out, and dry flat; the cord keeps its rib and the bands keep their thread.

From across a street they are wide green pants with two ribbons. From close the ribbons are bands with characters, a crane and a cloud in thread, and the cord shows its rib. They are the pair for someone who wants the widest trouser and a reason for it.

The waist is a flat band with the bands stitched into it at the front, and the pockets are set in the side seams behind them. The cuff tapers to the ankle without an elastic, so it sits on the shoe rather than over it.

Sizes run from M to 5XL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about the japanese pants

What kind of trousers are these?

Japanese street trousers: cargos, joggers, wide legs and the tobi and harem cuts of the building site and the temple town, several embroidered with cranes, dragons and clouds. Every page says the cut, and every pair was photographed with a white tee and white trainers, which is how they are worn.

Does it run small?

Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Take one size up from your usual; between two sizes, take the larger. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.

What is it made of?

Mostly light polyester-cotton blends, with denim for the two denim pairs, a linen-look cotton blend for the embroidered ones, corduroy blends for the patchwork and the workwear pair, and a heat-set pleated polyester for the pleated trousers. Each page says which.

Embroidered or printed?

Each page says. The cranes, the characters and the clouds are embroidered; the dragons and the camouflage are printed; the kimono and dragon panels are printed cloth sewn in.

Is it made in Japan?

No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.

How do I wash it?

Machine wash cold, inside out, and hang to dry; denim with its own colour the first time. Nothing needs ironing, and the pleated pair must not be.

What we sell, and what we don't

Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We say so on every page, because the alternative is selling you a word instead of a garment.
