About this piece

White with a navy crane band at cuff and hem, and the rest left bright

White is the brightest thing you can wear and the easiest to leave looking blank. This cardigan gives it a reason. The body is clean white, with a dry, textured weave, and around the lower sleeves and along the hem runs a band in navy printed with white cranes in flight, their crowns red, their wings spread. On white, the navy band reads like a frame, and the cranes inside it read like a photograph.

It is the summer version of the crane-band idea, the one for daylight. Where the black and navy bodies keep the design for the evening, this one wears it at noon, on a terrace, by water, and it looks right there in a way few printed pieces manage.

The name, Tancho, is the red-crowned crane itself, the bird of the Hokkaido marshes with the scarlet patch on its head, and the cranes in the band are drawn accurately: white bodies, red crowns, wings spread. If you want to know what you are wearing, it is a real bird.

The band is printed, not embroidered, with the white of the cranes matched to the white of the body so the design reads as one piece rather than two. The cloth is polyester with a matte, slightly slubbed hand, chosen because white is the colour that yellows first on cheaper fabric and this one does not, and because a summer cardigan needs to stay light.

The cut is an open kimono cardigan: flat edge down both fronts, no fastening, wide sleeves that stop at the elbow, hem at the hip. Over a white tee, everything goes tonal and the band is the only event, the cleanest way to wear it. Over navy or charcoal, the tee links up with the band and the white body becomes the frame.

It goes with white trousers, light denim, stone, cream. This is the piece for the day when you want to be the brightest thing in the room without being the loudest, and it manages the difference.

At thirty centimetres the cranes are drawn one feather at a time, red crowns and grey-edged wings on white, over navy. At three metres the band is a dark stripe on a white jacket. It is built to be read at both distances, in a queue and then across a table, and it holds up at each.

Sizes run from M to 5XL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about the kimono jacket

Is a kimono jacket the same as a haori?

No. A haori has a collar band folded back on itself and is worn open over a kimono. A kimono jacket has a plain faced edge, closes with a single toggle or tie, and is cut to sit over a T-shirt.

Does it run small?

Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Between two sizes, take the larger. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.

Is it silk?

No. Each piece is cotton, linen or polyester, as stated in its description and on the inner label. We never sell silk as something else, or something else as silk.

Is it made in Japan?

No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.

How do I wear it?

Open, over a plain T-shirt, with denim or dark trousers. Elbow-length sleeves make it a spring and autumn layer; long sleeves carry into winter over a knit.

How do I wash it?

Machine wash cold, inside out, with similar colours. Hang to dry. Iron on low, inside out over any print or embroidery.

What we sell, and what we don't

Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We say so on every page, because the alternative is selling you a word instead of a garment.
