About this piece
Round paper lantern painted with plum blossom, lotus or a pine, in three designs
A paper globe with a painting on it. This round lantern is a white paper shade on a wire spiral, printed in the manner of an ink painting with one of three designs: red plum blossom on black branches, a pink lotus rising from green leaves, or a pine tree in green and brown leaning across the globe. The paper is ribbed by the wire and the painting wraps a third of the way round, with the rest left white.
It is the lantern of the summer festival and the tea room, and lit from inside it turns the painting into a shadow play.
The name, Bonbori, is the small round lantern of the doll festival, the one with the paper shade, and this is that shape at a hanging size.
The lantern is a ribbed paper shade on a wire spiral that collapses flat and springs open, with a wire hanger at the top and an opening for a cord. It is a shade, not a lamp: hang it over a pendant cord with a low-heat bulb, or drop a battery LED inside, and the paper does the rest. No bulb or fitting is included.
Hang it from a ceiling hook over a cord in a bedroom, a hallway or a corner of a living room, or several at different heights over a table for a summer evening. Unlit it is a white globe with a painting; lit it is a soft warm sphere with the branches or the lotus in silhouette.
The three designs are three seasons: the plum is late winter, the lotus is high summer, the pine is all year. The painting is printed, not painted, and it is crisp on the ribs; the white of the paper is warm, closer to cream than to snow.
The ribs are the detail: the wire spiral pleats the paper in fine horizontal ribs from top to bottom, and the painting crosses them, so the branches step down the globe like a staircase. Lit, the ribs show as fine dark lines.
From across a room it is a white globe with a mark of colour. From close the mark is a painting, the ribs show their pleats, and the paper its grain. It is the lantern for a bedroom and a person who wants a soft light with a picture in it.
Keep it dry and away from a hot bulb; paper marks with water and browns with heat. It collapses flat for storing. Dust it with a soft brush.
One size, a globe about the width of a large dinner plate. It arrives flat and opens in a minute.
Questions about the japanese lanterns
Do the paper lanterns come with a bulb?
No. They are shades on a collapsible wire spiral with a hanger. Hang one over a pendant cord with a low-heat bulb, or drop a battery LED inside. Keep any bulb cool; paper browns with heat.
How do the solar lanterns work?
A panel on the roof charges a battery by day; the LED comes on at dusk and off at dawn. No wiring, no switch. Push the stake into a lawn, a bed or a pot where the roof gets sun.
What are they made of?
The paper lanterns are ribbed paper on a wire spiral; the barrel lantern has black rims top and bottom. The garden lanterns are a black weather-resistant plastic with a solar LED inside.
Are they made in Japan?
No. They are a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
What sizes are they?
The round lanterns are about the width of a large dinner plate. The barrel lantern comes in 15 by 25 or 20 by 25 cm. The garden lanterns stand about a forearm high on their stakes, in sets of two to eight.
How do I store them?
The paper lanterns collapse flat between their rims or hanger; keep them dry. Brush snow off the solar panels in winter so they keep charging.
